At the third of the season's Monday night competition evenings (20 June) for junior Harriers, and friends, there was another set of good results by all that took part. Sam Collins and Declan Truan-Thatcher battled for supremacy in the u11 age group, with Thea Piercy best of the girls; whilst for the 11+ age group it was a much tighter competition. Juniors age 11 and upwards who wish to be conisdered for selection for the next SW League Div 1 fixture on Sunday, 3rd July, should contact the team managers asap.

This past weekend (18/19 June) saw a number of the juniors Harriers selected to compete for Somerset Schools in the SW Schools Track & Field Championships at Exeter and the outcome was for one of them to achieve a Championship Best Performance (CBP) (ie SW Schools record). Vicky McCabe from Cranmore went to 5th on the national rankings (for u17s) with her prodigious Long Jump leap of 5.75m. There were good performances by a number of other Harriers, and also by team-mates from the Yeovil side of the track & field team. Also competing this weekend was a small group of Harriers at the Martock 10k. (Photo of Elise Thorner - 70 -in the inter-girls 800m for Somerset Schools - by Al)

There were over 20 Harriers competing in the 3rd race in this season’s Yeovilton 5km road races which took place on Wednesday (8 June) with 184 finishers in total. Despite competing in warm and humid conditions a few managed personal bests. Winning time was by Taunton ACs Phil Burden in a nippy 15.03. First home for the Harriers was Pete Grist in an excellent 6th place overall in a time of 16.28, whilst Tom Dukes also managed to go sub-17 with his 9th placed 16.57. Jon James was a very welcome returner back to road racing, not quite over his injuries but achieving a very respectable 17th place 17.52 clocking. There were personal bests by Lily Hawkins, returning for the season from Plymouth University, with her 19.34 and also for Aime Biss with her 29.07. Also back from University was Callum Moir who ran a 20.53 for 62nd place. (Group photo by David)

Some 20 or so of the Harrier’s track and field athletes have been in action this past week at a variety of fixtures. The British Athletics League’s (BAL) Division 3 Men’s match was in Chelmsford on Saturday 4 June, but the bulk of the Harrier competitors were in action at the home South West League Div 1 match on Sunday 5 June. Some Harriers even managed to squeeze in a BMC-organised meet, sometimes in addition to turning out for the club! Every single athlete competed really well for the team, with many achieving new personal bests, whilst gaining valuable team points for the combined Yeovil Olympiad (& Wells City Harriers) team. Meanwhile there were a handful of senior Harriers competing at the hilly Crewkerne 10k road race on Sunday.
