Wells City Harriers were once again in action in various events this past weekend. We had athletes out competing at the Shepton 10k race; the Herepath Multi-terrain 'Half' on the Blackdowns, and at the Dorset Stickler 10m from Shillingstone. Tim Hawkins followed up his previous weekend's 2nd place finish at the tough Exmoor Stagger with 2nd again at Herepath; Clare Prosser was 2nd woman home at the Stickler; and Tom Dukes was outsprinted for the line at the Shepton 10k race. Harriers continue to compete hard at a whole range of road, cross-country and multi-terrain races. The Exmoor Stagger saw both Tim Hawkins & Clare Prosser finish 2nd after the slog across 16.2 miles of moorland. The Gwent Cross Country League fixture saw Elise Thorner finish 2nd in the combined u17/20 race whilst Ollie Dickinson was 5th in the equivalent mens race. The 163rd edition of the Street 5km races took place on Wednesday evening (12th October) with accompanying 1k & 2k races for juniors. The Clive & Angela Thomas Series continues to attract a great range of ages and abilities - some at the sharp end, and some running for a monthly time-trial and fitness on the 5 lap circuit.
There was good support too, by parents of juniors and friends of seniors, and we thank all the race officials for their efforts in ensuring the races went off without mishap. Ed Knudsen of Avon Valley Runners won the 5km race - welcome back to the area Ed. There was a new V70 course record by Len Horlock of South West Veterans AC. Helen Southcott won for the women whilst Linda Lascelles had the best age-graded performance of the evening. A large squad of Wells City Harrier members competed at the first of the season’s cross country League matches this past Sunday (9th October) when 18 took part in the Wessex League match held at Canford Heath, near Poole. The team had a number of victors in the different age groups. Luke Macpherson was 1st in the u15 boys race with Caitlin Carnegie & Ben Lloyd winning the u17 women’s and men’s races, respectively. For the senior men, Tom Thick had an excellent run for 2nd place. Also in action this past weekend was another 20 or so Harriers with Tom Dukes winning at Pilton Festival 10k; Toby Watson in the accompanying 2km race; and Chris Green 2nd at the tough Mendip Muddle, amongst other good performances. At the latest of the Somerset Race Series races, sponsored by Yeovil Glass, the Burnham Half marathon on Sunday (2nd October) saw a total of 203 finishers. Leading home the Wells City Harriers contingent was V40 Tim Hawkins in overall 3rd place in a time of 77.08. Coming up this next week is the start of the Club’s Cross-Country season and also next Wednesday (12th October) the start of the 28th season of the Street 5km races – get ready! Also in this report is a ‘Blast from the past’…..
