Oli Frost stepped up to the mark when he completed the Ultra Trail de Mt Blanc (UTMB) in 37 hours on Sunday morning (28 August), crossing the finish line in Chamonix, France, with his young daughter who accompanied him for the final 100metres of the 170km race. Oli had run up and down the mountains, starting and passing through 3 different countries with a total height gain of 10,000 metres. That's an amazing effort! Meanwhile a host of junior and senior Harriers have been out competing (& sometimes winning!) over the Bank Holiday at somewhat nearer, and shorter, events, on the road and over the fells. Some Harriers even found time to help out at the annual Baltonsborough Road Race. Below sees the assembled mass of Harriers at the end of Baltonsborough - race winner & Harrier Jack Bancroft was 'cooling down' and is not in the photo (photo by Dave)

The Club supplied a number of junior and senior athletes to bolster the Yeovil Olympiads squad at the Southern Athletics League Div 2 fixture, at Little Marlow. There were a number of the Harrier Sunday training group members in action at the Reykjavik Marathon, in Iceland; and there was a handful at the Crook Peak Fell race on Wednesday. Plaudits to all! Deb Glover was first home for the Wells City Harriers at the latest of the Yeovilton 5km road races last Wednesday, 10 August. In a field of 154 runners drawn from across the region, Deb ran her quickest ever road 5k, finishing in 56th place (4th female) in a time of 19.33. A new pb by 1 second! Meanwhile on Tuesday 16 August, Club coach Jon James co-ordinated a ‘give it a try’ competition evening which had Harriers having a go at 4 track & field events: 200m sprint; shot put; Long Jump; and 1500m. Using Age-graded tables, we can then see that, once again, Elise & Ollie Thorner are the best highly tuned athletes of the bunch! (photo below by Lee of the Harriers at Yeovilton)

There were a number of Wells City Harrier members of all ages in action this past week. On the track we provided some of the team to bolster the Yeovil Olympiads in the Mens British Athletics League and they pulled off a great 3rd place (out of 8) to preserve their status in Divsion 3. Sam Harding was busiest on the day and he then went and competed and won twice on the Sunday at the South-West inter-Counties Championships. u13 boy Adam Davison was also a SW Inter-Counties Champion in the 200m sprints on Sunday, whilst others achieved personal bests. Meanwhile a group of seasoned Harriers were out competing at the Haselbury Trail 10km race last Wednesday and were making plans afterwards for all sorts of other distance races.
