Wells City Harriers had two members competing as part of the Somerset Schools team this past weekend at the prestigious English Schools Championships. The Championships were held at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham and attracted good crowds of supporters on both days. Elise Thorner came away as English Schools Champion for her win in the Inter Girls 1500m Steeplechase, whilst twin Ollie Thorner was 6th in the Inter Boys Pole Vault. Meanwhile Chris Kelsey was competing at the latest of the English Fell Running Championship races in Wasdale.

YOAC/Harriers team competes hard at the latest South West T&F match whilst Chris and Graham lead the way at Charmouth & Quantocks

It was another good day of performances by Harriers of all ages as part of the Yeovil Olympiad team at the latest of the South West League matches at Exeter on Sunday (2nd July). Meanwhile a useful group of senior Harriers were out competing at the tough Charmouth Challenge Fell race on the Saturday, whilst another squad went to the latest in the Somerset Series races at the Quantock Beast on the Sunday. A good representation of just part of the full range of the Club’s activities in one weekend!

Elise goes to 8th on UK u17 rankings for heptathlon following SW Schools multi-events Championships

U17 Elise Thorner had yet another good weekend of heptathlon competition on 24th/25th June when in competition at the South west Schools Combined events Championships at the Bill Whistlecroft Arena in Yeovil. Elise competed as part of the Somerset schools intermediate girls team (of 4), and she came away with 3rd place overall with the team qualifying for the national schools final later in the summer. Elise goes to 8th on the UK rankings for u17 heptathlon.
Harriers conquer 103 mile Cotswold Way again , whilst Luke goes sub-4 for 1500m. Plus - Latest standings in the Somerset Race Series sponsored by M5 Glass/Yeovil Glass

Wells City Harriers had two teams out competing in the 103 mile off-road Cotswold Way relay this past Saturday 24th June. With the first leg starting at 7.00am at Chipping Camden and the final leg 10 finishing by the doors of Bath Abbey it made for another great day out for the fell runners in the Club. The team included some making their debut for the Club at the event as well as others who have been through several if not all of the legs, twice over in one case! There was a record entry of over 100 teams this year, a far cry from 1994 when the Harriers made their debut amongst 13 teams in total. Meanwhile, forsaking being part of the Harrier team in pursuit of his first sub 4 minute 1500m time was Luke Prior.(Photo of Laura, Mike, Pete & Paul by Laura’s assistant).

Congratulations to Luke Prior on his Southern Counties u20 5000m title achieved at Crystal Palace recently in a new pb of 15.14. Luke finished well clear of the chasing pack in these prestigious championships. Meanwhile a large contingent of Harriers ran well at last Wednesday's Yeovilton 5k road race, with Philip Bridge first Harrier home in 3rd place with 15.44. Also finishing 3rd was Chris Green at the tough little Beacon Batch fell race on the Mendips this Tuesday.
