Wells City Harriers were well to the fore again when the awards for the Somerset Series 2017, sponsored by Cornwall Glass took place on Sunday (26th November) after the Brent Knoll race. Overall male and female Series winners were Jon Gilling (Taunton AC) and Anne Kelly (Langport Runners) whilst Graham Goldsmid (4th, 1st V50) and Ali Blaney (2nd overall) were highest for the Harriers. Mud, mud and more mud. On 12th November 2017 following a 2 minute silence to mark Remembrance Sunday a group of the Wells City Harriers Up and Running group joined 1300 runners at Chipping Sodbury School to take on the challenge of the Sodbury Slog. This coming Sunday sees the final race in the year-long Somerset Race Series at Brent Knoll and a number of Harriers are in line for Series awards.Also last call for nominations for this year’s ‘special award’ to be made at Annual Dinner!

The Harrier committee met this week and welcomed Amanda Bigger, mother of u15 athlete Holly, to the role of Club Welfare office. Read on for some bullet points on decisions. At the weekend (11th/12th November) there was some great running by Wells City Harriers junior athletes at the 2nd UK Athletics Cross Challenge at Milton Keynes and a number of the senior Harriers, including many of the Harrier coaches, were out competing at multi-terrain events including the Sodbury Slog and the Drogo ten. 170th edition of the Street 5k races, November 2017; Tim & Alexandra win! Important news on XC championship links & Harrier socials too.

Over 100 runners toed the start line at the latest in a long line of Street 5k races last night (Wednesday 8th November). In fact it was edition number 170 and we’d be keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have run 100 or more! Whether it was your first edition or your 100th, we hope you enjoyed racing 5 laps: Tim Watson (Bristol & West) certainly did as he raced home to win in 16.10; whilst Alexandra Cutts (South West Road Runners) was smiling when she won for the women in 19.17. Wells City Harrier members were out in some strength at the weekend competing at cross country. Neil Biss did a great job at assembling a huge squad of 40 Harriers to compete at Aldon Hill, Yeovil on Sunday whilst Simon Prior team managed a select u15 boys team to compete at the national cross-country relays at Mansfield the previous day. Top honours were taken at the Wessex League match by Philip Bridge, Darcy Dryden, Jake Fisher, and Skye Fisher - some of whom may well feature on the podium at the County Cross Country Championships, if not the South-west XC Championships later in the season - no pressure! - Read on for entry links to these Championships.
