When the heavy rain was pouring down first thing in the morning, the organisers, athletes and spectators couldn’t help but be apprehensive as to what was in store for the Wells Fun Runs. In fact by the time the first race got underway, the eagerly contested junior race for Under8s, the sun was starting to shine and everything and everyone was nicely warmed up. By the time of the final race, the Wells Fun Run 10k, spirits were even higher and everyone worked up a real thirst! What a great day of racing in the splendid surrounds of Wells City – with most races starting in the Market Place and finishing alongside the Palatial moat it was easy for spectators to see lots of action. Read on for a report and the race results.

There were some excellent performances by members of the Wells City Harriers at the Somerset County Athletic Associations Track and Field Championships last weekend. The Harriers dominated many of the middle distance races but also had good performances across the field events too. Winning two Golds for the u13 boys was Jack Harvey with his 800m/1500m double. The same weekend also saw u20 Elise Thorner go to 3rd on the 2000m Steeplechase national rankings. Also – almost last call for volunteers & helpers (& entrants) at the Wells Fun Runs to be held on Sunday 27th May.

Members were in action at the Glastonbury Road races on the Sunday as well as track and field matches at Yeovil, Exeter and on the Millfield track, with some competing twice over the weekend at different venues. Headline news is that the combined YOAC/Harrier team won the British Athletics League match during the day on the Saturday; and then a whole host of juniors gained personal bests at the prestigious annual British Milers Club event at Millfield that evening; whilst others went onto (further) glory the following day at the Glastonbury Road Races, led home by Philip Bridge in the 10k event, and a few managed to support the team at the South West League match in Exeter.
