February Street races

There were 94 finishers at the 137th edition of the Street 5k road race on February 8th. Those racing no doubt included a small band that might have run some 100 times in these races over the 23 years of their existence - let us know if you have - but also some who were racing here for the first time: welcome to the car-full from Avon Valley Runners and also the Glastonian and the Running Forever competitor, who were here competing for the very first time. Results are on the tab to the right ....but read on for a report.
Harrier Olympics 2012 celebrations

The Harrier committee is backing a number of initiatives for 2012 to celebrate the Olympics coming to Britain. These include:
- a specially commissioned London 2012 Training top
- an Olympic themed fun event for juniors
- a major push to encourage more people to take up athletics and become involved in coaching and helping run the Club
We will announce more of the detail about these initiatives over the next month or so.....but below is some info for starters
Ben Tickner: Champion of the South!

There was an outstanding performance by the Harrier's Ben Tickner at the South of England Cross Country Championships held at Brighton on Saturday January 28th. In the final race of the day Ben won the Senior mens race with some great running, catching and overtaking the lead runner only in the final 200m of the 15km event. This capped a great day by the junior and senior Harriers that ventured to these prestigious Championships - for many taking part in their toughest races to date.

Mary Rand awarded Freedom of Wells

At a meeting of the Wells City Council last week, the Club's Honorary President Mary Rand was awarded Freedom of the City in a move to coincide with this Olympic Year. We congratulate the Councillors on their recognition of Mary as an inspiration to all, and we thank Tony Williams for his efforts in encouraging the Councillors to take this step. Mary set a World record and won the Olympic Gold medal for the Long Jump at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. She also won silver and bronze medals at the same Games. See About Wells City Harriers tab for the history of the Club for more information.
Marriott breaks Gloucester 50km record

Adrian Marriott wins Gloucester 50km race in a course record of 3hours and 47 seconds, and 7th fastest all time by a British man.
