The weather put paid to both the South Somerset area and the Mendip area schools trials due to be held Friday & Saturday, respectively. The Sedgemoor area trials went ahead as planned on Wednesday 16th ahead of the snow and there was some excellent running by the Harrier members taking part on behalf of their schools. In the minor girls (year 7), Victoria Prior was 7th & Lauren Cook 8th; in the junior boys (Year 8 & 9) Oliver Dickinson was 1st; in the inter boys (Years 10 & 11) Luke Prior was 1st; and for the inter girls Darcie Cook was 2nd. Well done all - all will be selected to compete for their area schools team at the forthcoming County Schools Championships. Mendip & South Somerset school athletes should contact area school team managers to be considered for their area schools team. See details about the County schools on their dedicated website at http://www.somersetschoolsathletics.org.uk/
Meanwhile one of the clubs senior internationals, Frank Tickner, is running himself back into form in an effort to once again be selected for Team GB at the World XC Champonships. Frank who has been selected 4 times for those Championships was disappointed not to get into the team selected for the recent European Championships but he had a very good race last weekend Jan 12th, running in the IAAF International at Antrim, Northern Ireland where he finished 4th behind Ayeko of Uganda , Bett of Kenya and fellow Team GB member Andy Vernon. We hope that Frank will be running for the Club at the South of England Championships on the re-arranged date of Saturday 16th February where he will come up against the defending champion and fellow Harrier, his brother Ben! Good luck to both and all the Harriers able to race on the new date..

The 142nd edition of the Street 5k race took place last Wednesday January 9th. Mike Pearce of Crewkerne Running Club swept to victory just ahead of the Harrier's Paul Maskell. It was a personal best for each of them. Mike's time places him 2nd nationally for the V40s over this distance so far in 2013, and follows on his excellent Budapest marathon time of 2.45 from October.
Paul's marathon training has been going really well too and this was his 2nd race in 4 days- a period which also included the hard Tuesday night session with the Harriers. For the ladies Emily Smith was first home in 18.43 with Harrier team-mate Charlotte Baker home in 19.36 - the first of the four excellent performances on the night by the fabulous Baker family.
For a full set of times and positions after 4 races see to the right. For the Series it is the best 5 results (of 6) that count. See you next month for edition number 143.
