Wells City Harrier Frank Tickner finished an excellent 45th as part of the TeamGB competing at the World Cross-Country Championships on Sunday March 24th at Myslecinek Park in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz. There was live coverage on the BBC2 Channel with Frank starting well and settling into a good rhythm, on the classic cross-country course with one significant hill climb each of the 6 laps - 12km in total with snow on all the surrounding fields but mud underfoot by the time the senior men's race started. The TeamGB senior mens team finished in 11th place overall with Frank being the 3rd member of the team home behind Jonathan Taylor & Steve Vernon. This was Frank's 3rd trip to the world championships - he has also competed at Edinburgh (2008) and at Amman, Jordan.(2009) Well done Frank! Official report here:

Also on the cross-country front, Oliver Fox was 6th in the Schools International running for English Schools at Dinefwr, Wales on Saturday. Oliver captained the Intermediate Boys team and was 4th English schools finisher. This follows on from his 6th place at the recent English Schools Championships. Also competing the same day for SW colleges, Matthew Dickinson was 4th at the National College Championships.
Meanwhile on Sunday, Frank's brother Ben Tickner was winning at the Yeovil Half Marathon: in a nippy 68.29, with the Club's Marathon Man for 2011 next home in 7th place with 76.18 (2nd v40). Graham Goldsmid was 42nd (3rd V50) in 88.43 and then Geoff Cole was next in with 1.37 for 133rd place. James Spring was 251st in 1.45 and Cath Goldsmid was home in 1.50 for 361st place in a total field of 813.

The 32nd running of the Butleigh 7 mile multi-terrain race saw almost 100 competitors and the Harrier's Matthew Dickinson sweep to victory in a nippy 46.00 well clear of Kevin Wakins (51.03) in 2nd place. First for the women was Yeovil's Rose Harvey in 11th place overall in 54.40, with 2nd female Sarah May in 55.37. Remarkably Matthew Dickinson had competed the previous day at the English Schools XC Championships (see separate report below) but still felt fresh enough to gain his convincing victory here despite the muddy conditions. The race was organised by the Butleigh Playing Fields Association with the support of Wells City Harriers and was race No. 4 in the Somerset Race Series sponsored by M5 Glass.
