The new Cross country season is almost upon us and the dates of the Club fixtures are virtually all confirmed. We enter two Leagues as a Club and both will help athletes of any age from 10 upwards prepare better for the various Championship races (starting in December) or for school Championships (after Christmas). As always the Club is dependent upon parents and senior competing members to take on volunteer roles if we want to continue to punch above our weight at these fixtures. Please contact any of the volunteer coaches or committee members if you want to offer to help. Team managers will be announced soon and detail will be on the Team News tab above.(photo by Paul from last year's County XC Championships)

There was an excellent turn out of Harriers at the prestigious South of England Road Relays, held once again on the Old Parade Ground of the Rushmoor Arena at Aldershot. Where once thousands of boots marched past the assembled top brass, the roads of the Arena were pounded by the fast feet of the athletes drawn from across the South - from as fas as Cornwall, Guernsey and Norfolk. The Harriers were once again the only Somerset team sending junior teams to compete and they stepped up to the mark before the Senior women and Men's teams took the stage. Top team performance was by the u17 men who finished 9th. The Harriers have now been entering teams to these road relays for over 20 years, and over that time we've been able to see some of the top juniors , like Mo Farah, and seniors, like Sonia O'Sullivan in action.

At the end of August there were two Wells City Harriers amongst a field of 2,300 other runners on the start line of the Ultra Trail de Mt Blanc. Behind them was two years of training and racing at various ultras to qualify for the event. Ahead of them was over 160km of continuous running, day and night over mountain passes, through green glades, along rocky trails and climbing over 10,000m in total. They started in Chamonix, France, and ran into Switzerland, and then into Italy before re-entering France on a clock-wise circuit. How did they get on?

The Harriers made up 10% of the field of 196 finishers at the September edition of the Yeovilton 5k on Wednesday (Sept 9th). A good number of the junior Harriers achieved personal bests in the good conditions and have set themselves up nicely to compete for the Club at next weekend's South of England Road Relays at Aldershot. Tom Dukes led the Harrier contingent home with 11th place time of 16.35 - not bad given that he'd run the Bridgwater Half the previous Sunday in a close to pb time of 76.30 (4th place there).
