There was a great turn out of almost 70 Harriers and friends at the pre-Christmas social last Friday evening (27 November). The Apple Tree Inn at West Pennard proved to be a fine venue with excellent food and good service, and we were properly looked after by the owners, brothers Simon & Graham and their staff. Our thanks to Chris Challis for his suggestion of venue and making arrangements for us.
The draw for the London Marathon places saw 12 names in the hat and the three succesful Harriers are: Duncan Verel; Andy Piper and Rob Moore. Commisserations to the other 9. One of the Marathon places was kindly provided by our partner Club, Yeovil Olympiads, and their representatives, led by the Olympiads Chairman Geoff Cole, squeezed home in the quiz which was excellently set and delivered by Richard Morgan.
Of course one of the best moments of the evening was the unanimous decision on the infamous Harrier 'bog-seat' award where Kieran Young managed to hold off all challengers this year thanks to his ability to go wrong at many races, quite often in successive years! There were 39 Wells City Harriers of all ages from 9 to 67 competing at the third fixture in this seasons Wessex Cross Country League this past Sunday, 22 November, held at Aldon Hill, on the outskirts of Yeovil. Leading the way were a few of the junior Harriers who won their age group races, with 17 year old Sam Sommerville winning the senior men's race and 16 year old Caitlin Carnegie winning the u17 women's race. They were backed up by a whole host of other great performances with Owen Dukes being the youngest Harrier and Berni Mundy, one of our Founding members still running strong. The course was the toughest that any will face in this year's Wessex League, and for the juniors of secondary schools age it will act as a good 'recce' for when they come and compete on the same course at the Somerset Schools Championships in late January.

This autumn and winter the path between Wells and Dulcote is being cleared by a group of volunteers from Sustrans and The Strawberry Line Group. The aim is to improve access for a range of users by returning it to its condition in the 1990s when the path was constructed from the abandoned railway line. As many of you will know, this path is popular with runners and has been used as a route for training sessions by Harriers. Also the path forms a part of the Wells Fun Run.
The clearance events happen most weekends and are organised by Richard Jones from the Strawberry line Group. If you would like to help please contact him to join his mailing list so that you can receive details of forthcoming dates on
In addition Saturday 5th December 10.00 am to 1.00 pm has been identified as a one-off date to mobilise as many Harriers members and friends as possible to join the clearance. All you need to do is bring a spade and perhaps gardening gloves and meet towards the Wells end of the path. Heading from the Morrison’s supermarket in the direction of Dulcote, the clearance will be taking place about 100 yards beyond the end of the tarmac section of path.
