Christmas Parlauf

The club's annual Christmas Parlauf race took place at the track on Tuesday evening. After last year's chaos in the pouring rain, it was decided to introduce a slightly new format: runners were again in pairings based on their 5K times, but then spent the 30 minutes allotted for the race each running 400m at a time. Having done a lap, they had to register their lap, recover and wait for their partner to complete their 400m. A 30m change over zone allowed for a bit of tactical thought, but this seemed to matter little as the lactic acid took over.
Hotly contested as ever, the winners were the pairing of Rick Dukes and Jacob Longman who completed 23.2 laps, very narrowly beating the second placers: Peter Clothier and Chris Green (23.17 laps). In third place came Gary Sheridan and Ollie Thorner (a junior), completing 22.75 laps. Well done!
Other results: Simon Prior/Nicola Roper (22.75 laps) Kieran Young/Katrina Prior (22.72 laps); Paul Chadwick and Ollie Dickinson (22.65 laps); Matt Rawlingson-Plant/Damien Pick (22.4 laps); Steve Masters/Mike Bosley (22 laps); Ed Tickner/Elise Thorner (21.75 laps); Luke Prior/Harriet Burr (21.65 laps); Andrew Tindal/Esme Sheridan (21.45 laps)
Many thanks to the helpers: Nathan Young, John Beveridge, Rex and Hannah Whitcombe.
And further thanks to Rex and Hannah for organising the meal at the Street Inn after the event - an excellent chance for post-race refueling!

...and no extra training needed? The challenge is on for Harriers and others who enjoy the Strawberry Line between Wells and Dulcote to lend a hand to the path clearance work which is going on. It could take 30 seconds off your 5k time; or a minute off your 10k time (!) if the super smooth surface is revealed rather than the existing muddy strewn track which sometimes confronts us. The Wells Fun Run will be back on May 29th (again as part of the Somerset Race Series) and work parties are out most weekends for a few hours to help. Last weekend a few of us made great progress (see photo below). Contact Richard at Sustrans if you can help this coming Sunday (13th Dec 10.00am-1.00pm) or to find out when the next effort is being made after Christmas - bring a spade & let Richard know you are coming. Almost 40 of the Wells City Harriers were in action this past weekend. On the Saturday (5th) there was a good turn out at the 3rd of the Gwent Cross Country League matches held at Blaise Castle, Bristol. In particular the senior men’s field was bolstered by some 13 of the Harrier men, whilst a number of juniors raced here gaining good practise ahead of this coming Sunday’s (13th December) Somerset County Cross Country Championships. Meanwhile, on the same day, Elise Thorner had a storming run for her school at the English Schools Cup Final at Bedford. Then on the Sunday (6th) another huge contingent were out at the 10.5 mile Full Monty race from Ham Hill, near Montecute, and one Harrier managed to compete on both days! At the British Athletics Cross Challenge races at Liverpool on Saturday (28 November), four of the very talented junior Harriers were competing. The senior and u23/u20 races also doubled as the official trials for the Team GB team to compete at the forthcoming European Cross Country Championships. 19 year old Oliver Fox had another great race to finish 5th in the u20 trial and is thus selected to compete in Hyeres (Toulon), France on 13 December. Meanwhile on Sunday at the Brent Knoll fell race, Kieran Young led the Harrier runners home, and after the race was duly presented with his very deserving Somerset Race Series award for his performances across the year.(photo below of Oliver racing for Team GB at Edinburgh in January 2015, Credit: 'David T.Hewitson/sportsforallpics' )
