There was an excellent evening of social activity for Wells City Harrier members, and partners, this past Friday (29th November) when the Club's Annual Dinner attracted over 70 to the Swan Hotel in Wells. Club Chairman Graham Goldsmid was master of ceremonies and expressed his delight at the Dinner bringing together members from the different training groups, Club coaches, and some of our esteemed partners from the Yeovil Olympiads AC. After wonderful food expertly served by the staff of the hotel, the annual ballot for the Club's reserved places for the London Marathon took place. Melissa Aspinall and Kim Parish were the fortunate 2 on the night, and our commiserations to the other 9 members whose names were in the ballot but missed out this year. Then, using the usual clapometer test of who should win the annual bog-seat award for doing something that made us all laugh during the course of the year, Ben Tickner managed to get the biggest applause and so deprive Andrew Piper of winning it two years in succession (*).... At the weekend (17th November) there was some good running by the Harrier’s Membership Secretary, Alice Knight, and the Club Secretary, Paul Chadwick, when they competed at the challenging but very scenic Drogo 10 mile multi-terrain race which started and finished by the National Trust’s Castle Drogo, near Okehampton, Devon. The race sees competitors running through the woodland and valley, alongside the scenic river, adjacent to the Castle - which was, incidentally, the last Castle built in England! In the field of 600 runners Alice finished in 305th position in 1.43 whilst Paul was 209th in 1.34. Former member Lucy Heath also had a great run for 198th in 1.33. Read on for news about the Somerset Series, the Club's Annual Dinner and the London Marathon places ballot.

The 182nd edition of the Street 5k race on Wednesday 13th November saw Wells Harriers Ben Tickner and Daisy Davies win on a night when the rain abated in time for the race but left an added obstacle in the form of the large flooded stretch across the route towards the bottom of Farm Road. Well done to all that raced on the night, especially the intrepid group from Avon Valley Runners, and to the hard working volunteer marshals and officials who helped make sure the event went off without any mishap. Read on for the full report and link to results and to hear of the bonus on offer to all at the next (183rd) edition on Wednesday 11th December.
