Last Thursday (30th July) the Harriers held their first formal training sessions since lock-down back in March. Numbers have been limited to start with whilst we test out our procedures and make sure we can all stay safe following UK Govt and England Athletics Guidance. The Thursday sessions are open for Harrier members to book a place and take place at the Strode Sports Centre field from 6pm onwards. Read on to follow instructions to reserve a place. We also have news and links to the track & field competition being hosted by our partner club, Yeovil Olympiads, at the end of the month – get your spikes on!

At last, after a long pause to the official Club organised training sessions since mid-March 2020, sessions are now resuming. Read on for how we are gradually bringing these session back into operation following official Guidance and with the agreement of facility providers, and also for a gloomy update on the likelihood of races being back any time soon. The pause, though, hasn’t stopped groups of Harriers meeting up to train together, nor members having a go at Virtual races with our Senior Club coach Jon James winning the England Athletics 5k Championships in his V55 age group!

I hope everyone has been enjoying the look back at 50 years of the Glastonbury Festival this past weekend? For many of us the weekend is synonymous with the Cotswold Way Relay – 103 (+) miles of tough hills and a very sociable day out in beautiful countryside. Here we look back at Harrier efforts on the Relay and look forward to the possible return to training and competition.

Will we be allowed to overtake? and other conundrums when competition returns (photo by Paul)
Three months on and there is light at the end of the Covid-19 tunnel for a return to Club organised training. Competitions are also starting to return with the last week's televised athletics from Oslo taking an early centre stage and giving an inkling of how any Track & Field Meets may have to be organised if/when they return in the UK in the next few months. We still await any sign that off-road or road races will resume and, for now, ‘virtual’ races with time-trialling will have to do. Read on for our latest update on what is happening and what to anticipate.

Wells City has been the backdrop for a variety of editions of road races over the years since the first one held in October 1981. We’ve had some talented athletes come and run, up to and including international standard runners, and had races of varying distances for all ages, raising good money for some great local causes. We will sadly miss it this year but hope to be back in some form or other next year, post Covid-19. Read on for the history and to see how many names and faces you recognise.
