The new season of cross country is nearly upon us. Wells City Harriers have had great success in recent years and we are confident that we will continue this into the next season. This year we are looking to increase the depth and diversity of the teams and would love more Harriers to represent the club. Currently we participate in the Wessex XC and Gwent XC fixtures. All fixtures are free for members. For more details visit our Cross Country page here.

u17 Tom Webb (above leading out the runners) has continued to show great form and won last Wednesday’s early September version of the Yeovilton 5km in 15.12 with some great running. Graham Goldsmid and Rosie Parks also picked up age category 1st prizes,
Meanwhile a couple of Harriers made it over to the Isle of Wight for the tough three-race Southern Fell Running Championships this past weekend where there was a considerable drop out rate after the 2nd race held on the Saturday afternoon due to the blistering heat. v60 Paul, seen below, finished 39th overall in the Championships.
This report also wraps up the results from the Harrier members who competed in the final South West League match held on Sunday 3rd September, celebrates Iris Courtney’s Team England run, and reminds all about the forthcoming Cross Country season.
All hail the national track 3000m champion Tom Webb, whilst Alex wins Baltonsborough 5 again and a victory for Zak at Bridgwater.

Whilst most/some of our attention last weekend might have been on the World Athletics Championships in Budapest one of the Harrier juniors was busy winning the national u17 men’s 3000m title on the track in a closely fought race at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. In a gutsy front running approach to the race the Harriers junior male athlete of the year, Tom Webb, held great form especially over the final 600m to hold off all challengers to win in 8.38.
Meanwhile there was a host of Harriers of all ages at the annual Baltonsborough Road races, with both the 5 mile and the 1.5 mile events being won by Harriers – local resident Alex Coombs in the longer event and Oskar Beck, for the boys, and Rosie Train, for the girls, over the shorter distance.
There was at least one Harrier out competing in Budapest (me!) but you won’t have seen the so called ‘Heroes Run Mass Race’ on TV, as it used part of the World Athletics Championships Marathon course and was open to all comers. One of the joys of travelling is being able to run and compete all over the place. Read on also for a Harrier who has just competed her first Ultra, gaining a 3rd place and it was also a hot day at the Bridgwater 10K and Half Marathon with another Wells Harrier taking pole position.
Just a reminder that as the Track & Field season now winds down – last SW League fixture on the 3rd ; last Open fixture at Yeovil next Saturday 9th – that there are the road relays to look forward to and then the start of the cross country season. Please contact Harrier Secretary Alexander Coombs to express an interest in competing so that you can be entered in time (free to Harriers & YOAC members) and for the junior age groups consider offering to help team manage your sons/daughter’s age group at such events.
DEADLINE FOR SOUTHERN ROAD RELAYS is to let Alex know no later than 6th Sept for a team entry!

There was some excellent running once again at the latest monthly Yeovilton 5k road race with Adam Gibson (far left in photo above) leading the way for the Harriers with a fine 5th place finish. Photo also shows left to right: Laurence; Phil; Craig & Gary
Meanwhile, the National League team has now completed their season after the 3rd fixture and have finished an excellent 7th place out of the 16 teams competing. The National League is now a combined men’s & women’s League, replacing the British League of old.
The Yeovil Olympiads team, of which we are part, were promoted from Division One to the Championship this season, and did themselves proud by more than holding their own against some much bigger Clubs.
Matt Lusby once again contributed valuable points by competing in three track events; Mark Duffett achieved two personal bests; and u17 Tom Webb had another storming run.
We should also mention the sterling effort by the YOAC Chairman Geoff Cole to score team points when competing in the various throws.
This web report also includes a call for team members for the prestigious Southern Road Relays on 23rd September; and team managers to help manage individual age groups. Dates for the Wessex XC League are also listed here - start planning your autumn season.
