Hannah Blundy at the National XC Championships
The latest round-up of racing and training updates includes an action-packed Street 5K on 12th February, where Tom Webb took the win in a highly competitive field, and Debra Bruce claimed victory in the women’s race. The junior races saw exciting finishes, with Zoe Frost and Oliver Gay tying in the 1K and Toby Hirst winning the 2K. Meanwhile, the sold-out Babcary 7.5 Mile Road Race on 23rd March saw Zak Hurrell return to racing with an impressive win, while Lizzy Ingram was the first female finisher. The English National XC Championships on 22nd February tested competitors with brutal conditions at Parliament Hill, with standout performances from Matt Lusby, Emily Murray, Hannah Blundy (8th in Junior Women), and Phoebe Phillips. Looking ahead, the final Gwent League fixture takes place on 2nd March, and Early Bird entries for the Wells Festival of Running close on 28th February. Training updates include the return of track sessions for the summer season, and the Couch to 5K program is now open for bookings. Well done to all the juniors once again who contested the 1k (years 5&6) or 2k (years 7&8). There was a new 1k record set at the January edition by year 5 Rowan Kelly who is one of our very regular Monday junior group of athletes - coaches are wondering if he will still be a top athlete in 10 years time or go on to play for Burnley FC! His record lowers that of junior Harrier Curtis Steven set back in 2006...
Gwent League, Indoor Track and Field, Wiltshire 10 Miler and Somerset Schools XC

The fourth Gwent League cross-country race at Margam Park provided a tough yet enjoyable course, with notable performances from the Harriers despite missing some key runners. The women's team, though one short of the required four for scoring, finished 19th out of 60, led by Phoebe Aspinall in 14th place. The men’s team placed 8th in Division 1, maintaining 5th overall in the league, with Chris Green finishing 9th. Other recent highlights include strong indoor track performances from Tom Webb and Harrison Skuse, Somerset Schools XC results, and success at the Wiltshire 10 Miler, where Peter Grist claimed victory. The club is now looking ahead to the final Gwent League fixture in Brecon on March 2nd, hoping for a strong turnout.

The rescheduled fourth race of the 2024/25 Street 5K series took place on January 29, featuring impressive performances across all categories. Rowan Kelly set a new junior 1K record while Tom Webb dominated the 5K race with a time of 15:22. Meanwhile, New Balance athlete Elise Thorner achieved a 30-second PB in Boston, running 8:47 in a competitive 3000m field, meeting the European indoor qualifying standard. Early bird entries are now open for the Wells Festival of Running, and upcoming events include the fifth Street 5K on February 12 and various races in the Somerset Series.

Ruby Shaw in action at the Somerset Schools XC Championships
Wells City Harriers had a strong showing at the Somerset Schools XC Championships on January 18th, with standout performances from Ruby Shaw and Oskar Beck, who both claimed victory in their respective races. Several other Harriers secured top 10 finishes, boosting their chances of selection for the upcoming SW and English Schools Championships. On January 26th, a group of Harriers braved harsh weather conditions to tackle the Longleat 10K, where Matt Lusby dominated the race, winning in 35:55. Looking ahead, the next Gwent League XC fixture takes place on February 8th, with the final race scheduled for March 2nd in Brecon.
