The Harriers have been busy on roads, trails, and fells over the past few weeks, with standout performances across the region and beyond. From sharp racing at the SportsShoes Home Nations 5K in Cardiff and a strong turnout at the Yeovilton 5K finale, to testing climbs at the Southern Fell Running Championships on the Isle of Wight, fast times at the Burnham-on-Sea Half and one final track race of the season at the Yeovil Games. With the return of the Street 5K series and the Gwent League now on the horizon, the club’s momentum is set to continue into an exciting autumn season.

Wells City Harrier Elise Thorner has been selected for the GB & NI team at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, following a breakthrough season that has seen her claim a UK title, make her Diamond League debut, and post a personal best in the 3000m steeplechase. Elsewhere, Yeovil Olympiads battled in the National Athletics League Playoff, Stellan Corp impressed at the Bath Two Tunnels 5K, Harriers celebrated podium finishes at the Frome Running Festival, and local runners shone in the hotly contested Baltonsborough 5 Miler, rounding off a busy week of racing and club success. It’s been another action-packed week for Wells City Harriers, with more standout performances. At the Haselbury Trail 10K, Chris Green retained his title while Ellie Constable claimed a category win on the challenging two-lap course. The Yeovilton 5K delivered a flurry of PBs, with Phoebe Aspinall breaking the 18-minute barrier for the first time and Jon James making a remarkable V60 comeback. Harriers also took on the Crook Peak Cake Fell Race, where juniors made impressive fell running debuts, and last Tuesday saw our Summer Training Competition Evening. Off the track, members were excited to receive the club’s new technical racing vests, and the recently launched Thursday training programme is already proving a hit, with strong attendances and sessions designed to be multi-ability, structured, and fun.

Milo Cook getting a PB in the 1500m at the Yeovil Open
Wells City Harriers athletes have been in action across a busy schedule of competitions, with highlights including Elise Thorner’s championship record-breaking victory in the 3000m steeplechase at the Novuna UK Track & Field Championships, earning her selection for the World Championships in Tokyo. Harry Barton also delivered a strong performance in the 400m heats at the same event. Further afield, Zoe Frost claimed overall victory in her age group at the Scottish 6 Days Orienteering competition. Back on the track, numerous Harriers recorded personal bests at both the South West League fixture in Exeter and the Yeovil Open. The club now turns its attention to upcoming fixtures, including the SEAA Road Relays and NAL Playoff fixture. Please get in touch if you can participate. Yeovil Olympiads made history at the final National Athletics League West fixture on 19th July, earning a first-ever spot in the promotion playoffs. The day featured standout performances across the board, including a win for Matt Lusby in the 3000m steeplechase, and strong runs from Peter Grist in the 1500m and 3000m. PBs were achieved by Jack French (400m) and Alexander Coombs (800m), while Phoebe Aspinall also won the 3000m and placed second in the 1500m. Beyond the league meet, Harriers excelled at the South West Championships in Exeter, where Ruby Shaw, Izzy Kettle, and Oskar Beck were among the medallists. Meanwhile, Harry Barton represented Team GB at the European U23 Championships in the 400m hurdles, and Harriers also supported the Piddlewood Plod trail race, raising funds for local causes.
