The rain started just as the 147 runners got underway at the annual Babcary 7.5mile road race on Sunday. The race, supported and promoted by Wells City Harriers, attracted an excellent cross-section of seasoned Club runners mixed in with locals who might race just once or twice a year. Their efforts and their entry fees were much appreciated by the Babcary Playing Fields Association whose coffers are now £1500 better off.

First across the finish line was the Harrier‘s Alex Wiltshire, racing here for the first time in an excellent time of 42.14 despite the blustery conditions and increasing rain as the race went on.  Last year’s winner and fellow Team mate Tim Hawkins was 3rd in 44.08 this year, with junior George Mallinson making up the trio of Harriers in the top 10 with his 10th place in 48.19. 2nd male overall was Jason Scott of Crewkerne Running Club. First for the ladies was Linda Lascelles in a nippy 50.43 with Minehead's Hazel Hole 2nd in 53.48. 3rd for the women was Wimborne AC's Lynn Hutchings in 55.34.

For the Harriers, Damien Pick was 11th in 48.30; then Justin Thomas 14th in 48.56. Dean Titchener was 31st in 52.51, closely followed by Mike Rusca 34th in 53.06. Paul Chadwick was 39th in 54.26, and then Duncan Verel 58th in 57.12. In the age-graded standings used for the prize-giving, Maiden Newton’s Martin and Linda Lascelles were clear overall winners. It was great to see many local runners, unattached, having a go - if you want to come and train with the Harriers at any time you are welcome. We also have a beginners group starting on April 1st for 8 weeks - see calendar for details.

A small apology to Tim Hawkins as due to a mix up he missed out on 2nd age graded male prize at the presentations. Gary owes you abottle of bubbly! Thanks to all helpers especially Sue Cook & Pete Wright for taking results in the pouring rain. Race made £1494 and refreshments 199.80. All for the Playing Field Association.
