Wells City Harriers

"A FRIENDLY RUNNING CLUB THAT WELCOMES ATHLETES OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES"

The joint Yeovil Olympiads and Wells City Harriers team finished in its highest position ever in the British Athletics League when it finished 3rd, out of 8 teams, after the final League Division Three match at the weekend (Saturday Aug 8th). They have just missed out on promotion to Division 2, with Swansea and Bedord & County taking the top two positions. The team however pulled out all the stops to win the 4th and final fixture when they hosted the match at the Bill Whistlecroft Arena in Yeovil. The team is the only British Men’s team in Somerset. Meanwhile Kieran Young once again ran away with one of the Somerset Series races last week at Haselbury Plucknett.

From the Wells Harrier contingent there were some excellent performances at the track endurance events. Sam Harding achieved two personal bests with a 1.55.33 clocking in the 800m A race and 4.16 in the 1500m B race. Max Travers ran a season’s best for the 1500m outdoors with his 4.17. Luke Prior ran a 9.04 for the 3000m with Matthew Dickinson running in for 9.10 in the same race.

From the Yeovil contingent there were victories by Harry Hall (400m Hurdles A) Glenn Etherington (100m, 200m & 110m Hurdles A); Brendon England-Frost (110m Hurdles B); Ben Gibb (Pole Vault A & Shot & Discus B); Daniel Huntley (Pole Vault B). In every single event all the team excelled. Well done to all competitors, and the team managers for another successful British Men’s League season.

The latest Somerset Series Race, sponsored by Yeovil Glass, was held last Wednesday at Haselbury Plucknett, with the 10km multi-terrain race starting and finishing from the North Perrot Cricket ground. Kieran Young was never headed as he ran the two lap course, out in front, to claim his 7th victory out of 8 races to date. Kieran’s time was some 30 seconds ahead of 2nd placed Richard Bateson of Yeovil Town Road runners. Justin Thomas was 7th in 41.59 whilst Paul Chadwick was 42nd in 51.20. In the Series overall, Justin is leading having competed in 10 of the 13 races to date, and with 7 to go. The best 10 races of each competitor across the 20 race series will count in the final rankings, and the next race is the Battle of Sedgemoor 10k on Sunday August 30th. Harriers are reminded that team managers are now starting to finalise their teams for the South of England Road Relays to be held at Aldershot on the weekend of Sept 19th and 20th. Contact either Simon Prior, chairman; or Paul Chadwick, secretary, if you want to be on the list. Yeovil trained athletes should contact Annette Weale to be on the team.
