There were some terrific performances by Wells City Harrier juniors at the Somerset County Athletic Association & Somerset Schools combined events Championships held at Millfield track over last weekend. Elena Sidman won the Gold medal when she won the Minor Girls Quadrathlon event for Year 7, and Ollie Thorner won the Somerset bronze medal for his performance in the Junior Boys pentathlon event for Year 8 & 9 students.

Elena swept into the winning position on the fourth of the events, the 800m race when she recorded a new personal best of 2.27, a mark that takes her to 7th on the current UK standings for u13 girls. Elena also achieved a pb in the Shot with her 5.28m distance. In the 100m sprints she ran 14.84 and jumped out to 3.53m in the long jump.
Ollie achieved a personal best in the long jump with his 4.44m jump and also ran 15.68 for the 80m hurdles; high jumped 1.45m; shot put to 6.27m; and finished off with a nippy 2.25 for the 800m, just outside his personal best. In the same event Dylan Dukes had an excellent 800m race recording a new personal best for his best event over 800m with a time of 2.22 which will push him well up the national rankings. He also achieved 17.91 in the 80m hurdles, a 5.2m distance in the shot, and a mark of 3.66m in the Long Jump. Dylan finished in 23rd place overall out of 51 athletes despite not achieving a mark in the high jump.



In the Minor boys (year 7) Quadrathlon event Ben Hoskings ran 15.39 in the 100m, went out to 4.04m with the shot, and then a 3.22m long jump before finishing off with a 2.51 clocking for the 800m. This helped him to finish in 29th place overall out of 41 competing athletes from across the County.
In the junior girls Pentathlon, Victoria McCabe finished 7th amongst the Somerset athletes, 13th overall out of 49 and harrier team-mate Harriet Fox finished in 11th place (Somerset). In the 75m Hurdles event they ran 15.78 and 16.03 respectively; in the Shot they were 5.53m and 5,.71m; they jumped 1.33m and 1.21m in the high jump; and long jumped to 4.22m and 3.83m; before finishing off with 800m times of 2.39 and 2.35.
The Harriers continue to provide track and field coaching every Monday, except Bank Holidays, at Millfield track from 6pm. Register at 5.50pm in the announcers hut. We invite school students with an aptitude for athletics that want to compete for the joint team with Yeovil Olympiads at various regional and national Leagues to come and train with us so as to be ready for the team competition..
There are various track & field league matches this coming month, including the County Track & Field Championships to be held on Saturday & Sunday May 17th & 18th. The deadline for entries via the Harriers is May 6th – contact Paul to advise him by that date which event(s) you wish to be entered for. Members of the Harriers are also gearing up for the organisation of the Wells Fun Run to be held on Sunday May 25th and entries should be made in advance of the event to be guaranteed of a place on the start line. Members who are not competing should offer to marshal by contacting Kay Franklin.

We enter teams at all athletic disciplines - track & field (with Yeovil Olympiads); on road; off-road; multi-terrain and cross-country, and fell running. As previously publicised there are still places left in the two Harrier teams of ten competing at the long distance Cotswold Way Relay on Saturday 28th June.
