Wells City Harriers

"A FRIENDLY RUNNING CLUB THAT WELCOMES ATHLETES OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES"

The 32nd running of the Butleigh 7 mile multi-terrain race saw almost 100 competitors and the Harrier's Matthew Dickinson sweep to victory in a nippy 46.00 well clear of Kevin Wakins (51.03) in 2nd place. First for the women was Yeovil's Rose Harvey in 11th place overall in 54.40, with 2nd female Sarah May in 55.37. Remarkably Matthew Dickinson had competed the previous day at the English Schools XC Championships (see separate report below) but still felt fresh enough to gain his convincing victory here despite the muddy conditions. The race was organised by the Butleigh Playing Fields Association with the support of Wells City Harriers and was race No. 4 in the Somerset Race Series sponsored by M5 Glass.

Pete Wright's report below:

A good turn out of approximately 100 runners contested the 32nd Butleigh Multi –Terrain race which was the 4th race in the 2013 Somerset Series of races supported by Wells City Harriers.

The Butleigh Playing Fields Association hosted the race with proceeds from the race contributing towards the playing fields funds.

With heavy rain over the previous days the 7+ mile course over much of the surrounding country side was extremely heavy going, though winner 17th year old Matt Dickenson from Wells City Harriers made light work of the cross country sections to finish in a rapid time of 46.00 some 5 minutes clear of 2nd place Kevin Watkins with Wells’ Simon Prior taking third place just 10 seconds adrift, and he was the leading Vet 40.

Rose Harvey of Yeovil was the first lady home in an impressive 54.40; she was also the leading Vet 35, comfortably clear of second placed lady Sarah May who finished in 55.37.

Wells Harriers Graham and Catherine Goldsmid featured amongst the category winners each taking the respective V50 and FV45 awards. Robert Britton was the leading V60 and Leslie Nesbitt first FV55.

Rick Dukes took the local resident award with a respectable 53.26 and the newly instigated Joanne Batty Memorial Shield was awarded to a delighted Danny Doyle from Taunton AC.

The Juniors race saw Luke Prior dominate as winner of both U 12’S and U15’S with Tilly Cox-Thompson winning the U8’s and Holly Bigger winning the U10’s.

As ever at Butleigh a great spread of cakes and refreshments was much appreciated post race.
