There’s lots been happening and about to happen on road and off-road for Harriers.
The Harrier team of ten has now been and conquered this year’s Cotswold way relay. Meanwhile a number of Harriers have been steadily ticking off the Somerset Race Series races.
Covering 103 miles in ten stages, the Cotswold Way Relay race on Saturday June 30th 2012 running from Chipping Camden at 7am to the doors of Bath Abbey finishing around 6pm was another glorious day out on the hills for a crack team of Harriers. This is the 18th year we have contested the relay and we had a good set of novices and old hands taking part entered as 'Mixed' team of 7 men and 3 women.
The team finished 35th out of 82 entered; or 14th out of 44 in the Mixed teams category. No one got lost! John Reynolds probably thought that leg 1 was a bit short as he trotted round for 31st place, with Ian Biggs not too far ahead running for Mendip Hash. Bob Powell took on one of the hillier legs on Leg 2, finishing in 57th place. One of the team's two 'Kings & Queens' of the Cotswolds, Liz Green, came home in 54th on the 3rd leg with Mike Brown up ahead from the Mendip Hash. Dan Humphries was gutted to have to withdraw from his Leg 4 on the morning of the event - his Friday eve Roller hockey session putting paid to his knee. Dan had recce'd the leg the previous Sunday and was raring to go but is this an early nomination for the 2012 Bogseat award? (keep away from dangerous sports before a race!).
Paul Chadwick, running his 15th Cotswold event, and now on his 2nd circuit of the legs, was 29th on Leg 5, before Jason Tuck took over for the 6th leg and finished in 21st place. This was despite Jason running with the usual Saturday morning group from Evercreech earlier in the day as he prepares for a half marathon at Sturminster in early August. Rex Whitcombe was welcomed as a novice to the Relay and didn't disappoint with his 27th placing on leg 7. Clare Prosser had a great run on leg 8 to finish 3rd female, 15th overall. Elly Miln was a late replacement on leg 9, taking over Jane Whittaker's place when she was still feeling an injury. Elly was 48th. The glory leg was left to another newcomer to the relay team when John Beveridge was 41st.
Thanks to the team managers Paul & Helen Rutter.Well done all! start training for 2013 CWR now!

SOMERSET RACE SERIES
After 8 races in the 16 race Series (best 8 to count), Carol Buckland is in 2nd place, with Katrina Prior 5th, Cath Goldsmid 6th and Pat Challis 7th for the Harrier women. For the men, Graham Goldsmid is best placed in 9th with a number of other Harrierm men having clocked up results from 3 races so far. It’s still not too late to start the Series and do enough to count in the end of year standings.
The 9th race in the Somerset race series is in the Tin Tin Ten from Tintinhull next Wednesday July 4th at 7pm (don’t be late!). A multi-terrain 10k over fields starting and finishing at the village just off the A303.
The 10th race in the Somerset race Series is also coming up soon. The Quantock Beast on Sunday July 8th is one of the best multi-terrain races in Somerset. Over 5.7 miles you get to see the Quantocks in glorious July from Fyne Court.

Meanwhile on Saturday July 7th is the race to the top of the highest point on the South Coast – Golden Cap at Charmouth. This is a great Saturday afternoon race – lung bursting ascents and descents; school fete to occupy you before & afterwards. Shorter race for juniors.

In the good old days of course some folk would go and do the Charmouth Challenge Fell race on the Saturday and then go and ‘cool down’ by doing the Beast the following day. Is anyone going to do that this year?
Looking ahead, plans are already afoot for the September road relays at Aldershot for all ages (from 11 upwards to V60 teams). on Sept 22nd & 23rd. Soon after that we'll be looking for a team or two at another off-road relay: the Parrett Trail. Please speak to one of the team managers if you fancy a go at that!..or even consider the Isle of Wight Fell Running weekend on Sept 15th/16th. More details from Paul or go to
