Wells City Harriers

"A FRIENDLY RUNNING CLUB THAT WELCOMES ATHLETES OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES"

There were 94 finishers at the 137th edition of the Street 5k road race on February 8th. Those racing no doubt included a small band that might have run some 100 times in these races over the 23 years of their existence - let us know if you have - but also some who were racing here for the first time: welcome to the car-full from Avon Valley Runners and also the Glastonian and the Running Forever competitor, who were here competing for the very first time. Results are on the tab to the right ....but read on for a report.

There was the usual great race at the sharp end. Kieran Young (u17, Bristol & West) improved his 5k pb by a second we think, with Ed Stahl (Crewkerne) again not far behind. The tussle for 3rd & 4th places between Zach Stephenson & Philip Bridge (both Wells) was also great to see. For the women, Emily Smith (u17, Wells) smashed her pb, as did the 3rd placed female on the night, Lucy Baldwin (u13, Wells). Linda Lascelles was again consistent - this time in 2nd place on the night, but 1st F45

Other age category winners: M50 Nick Sommerville (Wells)  M40 Julian Ridgley (Running Forever);  M60 Clive Harwood (Wells);  M70 David German (Langport); F35 Fiona Price (Avon Valley Runners); F55 Flora Brooke (Yeovil Town RR) -sorry we missed Flora  & David from the presentations, and Julian collect your prize next month. There was also some great running by the juniors in the 1km and 2km races. (see results)

Next month we present the Series prizes and also we give everyone who has done at laest 5 of the 5km races this season a T-shirt. Make sure we know your t-shirt size and correct spelling of your name by Friday this week!. Kieran & Ed go into the race neck and neck on a cumulative 8 points - that'll make the March race interesting...whilst for the women the overall leader is Emily Smith, with Linda Lascelles not far behind. In the 1km & 2km races we have a shield for the overall series winners - again based on 5 performances out of 6. Luke Baker leads from William Pate in the 1km, and Alex Williams is out front ahead of Mike Biss in the 2km with Louise Rusca in 3rd leading for the girls. Keep your numbers for March 14th!
