Bathed in sunshine the 29th Butleigh Multi-terrain race and third race in the 2011 Somerset Series brought together 100 runners from around the South West to contest the 7 mile countryside route.  It wound its way around the village outskirts over paths and tracks including privileged access to private woodland estates. Along side the senior’s race were junior races covering a combination of laps around the sports field.

The younger runners lapping from 1 to 4 laps of the sports field; results for under 8’s: 1st Charlie Wadman, 2nd Isaac Lyons, 3rd Sam Arrowsmith. U 10’s: 1st Mica Clarke , 2nd Ben Hughes, 3rd Charlie Lucas. U12’s 1st Oliver Lambert, 2nd Amy Barlow, 3rd Beth Corfield. U15’s 1st Luke Prior, 2nd Haiden Watts.

With ideal conditions, rapid times were posted by the front runners in the main race, an exciting finish saw first placed Bitton Road Runner’s Robert Farley holding off a spirited sprint to the line by second placed Nathan Young of Bristol & West, just 2 seconds separating them. Roberts winning time of 43.42 establishing a bench mark for the newly revised course.

Veteran categorys V40/V50 were strongly evident and the leading pace makers saw Graham Harding of Town & Country Harriers finishing a mere second ahead of Thornbury’s Ken Ham clocking 47.21 and 47.22 respectfully.

Jenny Moore was the first lady timed at 50.46 in 14th place overall and a clear veteran winner.  Jenny will be a strong contender for veteran honours when she lines up in the London Marathon in a few weeks time. Local honours winning the Butleigh resident trophy was Rick Dukes, who clocked 49.42 and was in 13th place.

Organised by Butleigh Playing Fields Association in conjunction with Wells City Harriers the event benefiting the playing fields and with cakes aplenty by the Butleigh Ladies, all was enjoyed by all. A huge thank you to all involved, who made it such an enjoyable and rewarding day.

The next Somerset Series race is the Yeovilton 5k on Wednesday April 13th (note: not  the Easter Bunny race) and the next race sponsored by Wells Harriers is the Wells Fun Run on Sunday May 29th. Juniors can join in the Harrrier training at Millfield track every week 5.50pm for 6.00pm start.
