Wessex Ridgeway
22 May 2005
WCH put together a team in for the first time this year for the Wessex Ridgeway
Relay organised by Gillingham Trotters. The route of approx 60 miles runs from
Tollard Royal to Uplyme in Dorset and a maximum of 6 runners are allowed to
take part to cover 12 legs in total which are run non stop with baton in hand.
This year there were 13 teams and the following ran 2 legs back to back in this
order: Terry Kingham (who drew the short straw with the longest combination),
Viv Fursland, Caroline Fabre (with Julia Wiles for company, stepping in for
Bob Powell who had to retire with a hip injury at the last minute), Chris
Storie, Sue Cook and Laurie King. The day brought mixed blessings, starting at
07.00 with blue skies and spring sunshine, but deteriorating throughout the
day which led to thermal tops being donned as the wind and rain increased!
All runners had recced apart from the girls who understandably got lost but
so did Viv who disgraced himself following a lady in blue who he thought was a rival
competitor but who turned out to be out walking her dog! A contender for the
bog seat award this year for sure! Congratulations to all who took part especially
to our strongest runner, Laurie whose strong run ensured the team did not come last
despite the mishaps. All now look forward to taking part in the Cotswold Way
Relay due to take place on Saturday 25th June.
