Personal bests by Harriers at SW Inter-counties match Aug 8th 2010

There were some great track and field performances by Wells City Harriers members competing for Somerset County at the South-west Inter Counties match on Sunday at Exeter Arena. A number of the juniors recorded personal bests as they worked hard for the County against athletes drawn from Cornwall to Gloucestershire.

Oliver Fox ran a convincing best time in the u15 boys 3000m race with his time of 9.50 which propels him to 36th on the national rankings at this age group even though he will have another year in this group in 2011. Abigail Gibbons also had an excellent u15 girl’s personal best at the same distance with her 11.55. Later in the afternoon Luke Prior ran a personal best with his 5.00 clocking for the 1500m in 2nd place in the u13 boys race followed by Curtis Stevens who had a huge personal best by 15 seconds with his 4.33 for the u15 boys 1500, showing that his Tuesday evening training is now starting to pay off.

Two of the Club’s English schools Championship athletes were also out in action. Emily Smith was just pipped for 1st in the u15 girls 1500m with her 4.51 timing whilst Roo Black had a long journey back from Nottingham on the Saturday night to compete and managed a 1.48m in the u15girls High Jump followed by a solid 4.48m in the long jump.

For the seniors, one of the clubs England internationals Laura Parker had a run out with 2.14 in the 800m race, some two seconds or so shy of her best, whilst Jack Bancroft and Jon James both ran well at the 1500m with Jack 1st in 4.07 and Jon in 3rd in 4.13.

The next Track and field fixture for a number of Harriers is the Yeovil Games match on Sunday August 29th and then the final SW League Div One match at Exeter on Sunday Sept 5th where the combined team hopes to hold off the challenge of Cornwall AC and Taunton AC. Some of the senior men will also be competing in the final British League match coming up on August 21st. Please contact team managers if you are available for selection.
