Weston Prom 5mile 16 October

There are a number of winter race series to choose from including our own Street 5k, a new series at Burnham and the Weston Prom 5miles. Al Jones and I (Jon Gilling) decided to enter the 2nd race with the idea of possibly completing the whole series over the winter. We also met fellow Wells City Harriers Ed Willingham and Kayley Kennedy on the start line.

This could be an ideal race to get a personal best time if it wasn't for the always present wind. The course takes you up and down the Weston sea front on two laps and the wind is always either in your face or giving you a helping push on the back. Whilst I wanted to keep on the tail of Al, I failed quite early on as he increased the distance between us. However, I managed to pick up the pace on the second lap and moved up a couple of places closing in on Al. But not enough on this occasion - maybe next time?

Ed didn't race, choosing instead to pace his step-daughter around on probably her first 5miler. That technique worked with an excellent time and finishing position.

The Weston Prom Runs are an annual series of 9 five-mile races covering two laps of the famous Weston-super-Mare promenade. Races take place on the third Thursday of each month (September to May) from the Pavilion Bar (on Weston Sea Front near Knightstone Island). Start time is 7:30pm. Runners can enter the complete series or each individual race on the night. Entry fee is £3.00 (£2.00 extra for unaffiliated runners) per race. All standards of runner take part - so don't be put off if you are a new runner.

Race HQ on the day is at the Pavilion Bar, 2 Upper Church Road, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 2DT.

Competitors please note that individual points are worked out from the best 6 of the first 8 races. April is the last race that will count for individual points. The 9th race (May) is excluded so that we can get the prizes out quicker on the final night. However the Team prizes are worked out from all 9 races.
