There were over 30 Wells City Harrier members out competing at the County Athletics Track & Field Championships held this past weekend of May 14th & 15th at Millfield School. Many competed for the combined Yeovil and Wells team, whilst others competed in the colours of their school.Meanwhile Ben Tickner confirmed his pedigree for the 10k when he lowered his pb to 29.23 on the road at Bristol.

Performance of the Championships by a Harrier was that by Sam Bedford in the final of the u17 mens 800 metres race. Sam led a clean sweep by Harriers in the event where he set a Championship best performance of 1.59.30 for the distance and was followed home by team-mates Matthew Cole and Sam Harding for the other medals. Bedford’s time puts him in the top 30 in the UK so far this season.
Likewise in the senior men’s 800m race it was another clean sweep by Harriers when Jack Bancroft led home Andrew Deamer and Simon Prior. Bancroft’s time was 1.58. Bancroft and Deamer also won Gold and silver in the 1500m.Charlie Martin won the u15 boys 1500m race in a good 4.30, just ahead of team mate Sam Sommerville with Luke Prior in 5th place with a new personal best of 4.56. Martin and Sommerville’s times place them in the fastest 50 in the country according to the power of ten national rankings. Freddie Gummer was outside of the medals on his debut in the u13 boys long jump whilst Corey Taylor won silver for his High Jump in the same age group with his 1.26m after finishing 5th in the long jump.

For the girls Lizzie Hubner won Gold in the u15 girls 200m sprints with 27.66 in the final after winning her heat in a slightly faster time, and also won silver in the 100m with 13.52. Team-mates Isobel Glaisher, Abigail Gibbons and Rebecca Bowles made a clean sweep of the medals in the u15 1500m race, and Georgina Hoff won the 75m Hurdles in the same age group in 12.41. Roo Black picked up two bronzes in her first year in the u17 women group with her 1.45m High jump and 23.42m javelin throw. Rebecca Carver won gold in the u17 women’s 3000m race with a steady paced 12.02.
Meanwhile on the road one of the Club’s TeamGB international, Ben Tickner of Bruton, raced to a 29.23 10km time at the Bristol 10k for a new personal best and this places him in the top ten fastest over this distance throughout the UK this year. At the same race team-mates Nick Roberts ran 37.37 and Martin Bailey 41.21. For the Harrier women Emma Wiltshire was home in 44.33, Laura Darby-Jones in 51.35, and Katie Hellier in 63.49.
At last week’s Yeovil 5k race on May 11th there was again some good running by Harriers with Jon James winning outright in 15.25 and team-mate Pete Grist close behind in 2nd place with 15.42, and then Tristan Cooper in 4th with 15.56. Matt Lewis posted a personal best with 16.43 and Jenny Moore won the women’s race with 19.07 and Abigail Gibbons first junior girl home in 20.00 dead. There were other good times amongst the 30 or so Harriers of all ages that competed and full results can be found on the Yeovil Town website
Harriers and all local runners are reminded that the Wells Fun Run offering distances of 10k, 3 miles and various junior races comes up on Sunday May 29th. Please make sure you enter in advance as there are no entries on the day.Volunteer to marshal if you are not competing.
