There were some excellent early season performances by Wells City Harrier juniors at the early season Super 8 competition at Millfield track held on March 31st .
For the girls there was drama when Louise Rusca volunteered to cover the hurdles event and ended up with a lengthy trip to hospital and a broken bone in her wrist as a result of a tumble. This was such a blow for Louise who has been running really well during the cross country season. Louise had volunteered to cover the hurdles event so as to help when a team-mate was a late withdrawal, and the replacement athlete wasn’t used to hurdling. We wish Louise a speedy recovery.
Emily Richards competed well at Javelin and the 200m, whilst Lucy Baldwin was 4th at the 800m with 2.45 and 5th in the Long jump with 3.54m. Lucy Harding also ran well at the 100m sprint and Shot put.
For the boys Corey Taylor looked good at Javelin, finishing 2nd with a 20m plus effort, and also ran well at the Hurdles. Lewis Blannin was 3rd in the Long jump with 3.75m and also had a good 100m sprint. Josh Taylor, one of the Harrier’s middle distance athletes was 3rd in the 800m with his 2.44 before going on to compete in the shot. Freddie Gummer achieved a joint 2nd at High Jump with 1.20m and finished off the evening when, despite Louise’s injury, the 7 remaining team members managed a spirited performance in the medley to be 2nd in their race.
Super 8 Team manager Graham Goldsmid was well pleased with the evening’s effort: “ Every single Harrier and all of the other youngsters taking part seemed to really enjoy the event, and hopefully many of them will go on to compete at Schools and Harrier events throughout the forthcoming season.” Club Chairman Paul Chadwick commented “There was a great spirit amongst the 8 Harrier athletes and great to see them all stepping up to the mark against some tough opposition.”
The Harriers are holding competition evenings for local youngsters on Monday April 11th, May 9th & June 13th at Millfield Track starting at 6.00pm, and ending at 7.15/7.30pm.
