The 2025/26 Street 5K Series kicked off in October with chip timing, attracting 93 runners and 12 juniors. Oskar Beck won the 5K in 16:38, Daisy Davies took the women’s title in 18:50, and junior Ruby Shaw set a new 2K course record of 7:04. Wells City Harriers also excelled in recent events, with Tom Webb debuting impressively at the Cardiff Half Marathon in 67:02, and strong performances at the National Road Relays, Mother Tucker’s 10K, and we have Harrier winners from the Somerset Road Championships.

And they are off! The juniors set off on the 1K and 2K races.

The 2025/26 edition of the Clive and Angela Thomas Street 5K Series kicked off in style this October — and for the first time ever, the event featured chip timing! The new system was a hit, allowing for quick, accurate results and a seamless prize presentation shortly after the final runners crossed the line. The official results are now being uploaded to The Power of 10. It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout, with 93 runners completing the 5K and 12 juniors taking part in the 1K and 2K races.

Race Director, Stephen Nicholls, was excited to be introducing chip timing for the first time.

Performance of the Night went to junior Harrier Ruby Shaw, who stormed to a new female junior 2K record with an impressive time of 7:04 – congratulations, Ruby! Hot on her heels was Heath Hughes Davies, the first boy home in 7:09.

In the 1K event, Rowan Kelly edged out Jonah Barrington and Oliver Gay to take the win in 3:28, while Maddie Gay was the first girl to finish, clocking 4:22.

Over in the main 5K race, Oskar Beck led from the front to take the overall win in 16:38. The women’s race saw a thrilling battle between Daisy Davies of Taunton AC and Louise Mills of Woking AC, with Daisy just edging ahead in 18:50.

Prizes for the race and age category winners were presented shortly after the event at the United Reformed Church, rounding off a great evening of running.

National Road Relays

The National Road Relays took place at Sutton Park, Birmingham on Saturday 4th October. Our U15 boys’ team — featuring Joe Whelan, Oskar Beck, and Jamie Williams — produced a strong performance to finish 16th overall. This was particularly impressive given that they placed 13th at the Southern Relays last month.

Equally commendable was our U17 girls’ team of Isabelle Whittle, Florence Tibbatts, and Ayla Chard, who secured an excellent 10th-place finish after placing 8th at the Southern Relays.

Well done to both teams! More photos and videos can be found here.

Cardiff Half Marathon

Tom Webb made an impressive debut over the half marathon distance in Cardiff, finishing 27th in a highly competitive field with a time of 67:02 — just seven seconds shy of breaking into the British all-time top 10 for the U20 age group. It marks excellent preparation for his upcoming target, the T100 triathlon, which features an 18K run alongside a 2K swim and an 80K cycle.

Also racing in Cardiff was Jonathan Williams who went on to record 93:27 — his second-fastest half marathon and a season’s best — placing 1,383rd overall.

Somerset Road Championships

This year, the County Championship was organised on a league-style basis requiring entrants to complete at least 2 out of 3 of the races selected by the County Association. This was intended to allow runners a choice for which races to enter and not be limited to one specific day for a one-off championship. The selected races were the Wells 10K, Baltonsborough 5 Miles, and Burnham Half Marathon. These races have now finished, and results are now available.

Scoring was based on the order of finishing among Somerset eligible athletes in each race. 1 point for 1st Somerset man and woman, 2 points for 2nd place, and so on. At the end of the series of 3 races the man and woman with least total points would be champions (Gold medal) excluding the worst result for those completing 3 races. If there was a tie, we used relative finishing positions of those tied when competing against each other in the same race(s). Silver and Bronze medals were decided on the same scoring basis. As in past years age categories were not used for this championship.

58 men and 38 women took part in at least 1 race. 12 men and 12 women completed 2 races, therefore qualifying for the championship. 2 men and 2 women completed all 3. The County Association thanks the individual organisers and organising Somerset Clubs for their help by including the County Championship in their races and for coping with the extra admin needed. We would also like to thank all those runners who took part. The County Association will discuss whether to continue this format for next year or consider an alternative.
