Pete Wright on the ascent at the Southern Fell Racing Champs
The Harriers have been busy on roads, trails, and fells over the past few weeks, with standout performances across the region and beyond. From sharp racing at the SportsShoes Home Nations 5K in Cardiff and a strong turnout at the Yeovilton 5K finale, to testing climbs at the Southern Fell Running Championships on the Isle of Wight, fast times at the Burnham-on-Sea Half and one final track race of the season at the Yeovil Games. With the return of the Street 5K series and the Gwent League now on the horizon, the club’s momentum is set to continue into an exciting autumn season.

Dan Maydew racing in Cardiff
Three Harriers crossed the River Severn to race at the SportsShoes Home Nations 5K, a race staged over a fast multi-lap circuit of Coopers Field in Bute Park in Cardiff. Multiple waves allowed a fierce competition and the opportunity for a PB. Dan Maydew finished in a time of 16:13 in his first 5K of the year. Matt Lusby had a strong race, despite running with a leg injury sustained mountain biking abroad with a time of 16:30. The performance of the evening went to Jon James who finished in 16:55 in only his second competitive race of the year following a long injury. This has placed him second fastest by a V60 this year, 16 seconds behind the lead time.
You can watch the race back here.

Southern Fell Running Championships
[Report by Oil Frost]

Pete Wright and Oli Frost Pre Race
Wells Harriers Pete Wright and Oli Frost took part in the Isle of Wight fell running series at the weekend that included the southern England fell running championships. The weekend consisted of three challenging races with sharp descents and ascents over mixed terrain all starting from Ventnor seafront on the south coast of the island. Clubs from across southern England came with a heavy emphasis on London clubs such as Serpentine, Victoria Park Harriers and Tower Hamlets AC and London Frontrunners and the local island club runners. In all just over 100 entries.
The first race, the St Boniface Fell was 3.8km with 235m of ascent. Oli (V40) was 19th overall in 22mins10sec. Pete (V70) was 96th in 33.04. The second race was the Ventnor Horseshoe, 12km with 443m of ascent. A tough race after the morning's efforts. Oli was 27th in 1hr10mins. Pete was 94th in 1hr48mins. Pete marshalled for the 3rd race on Sunday morning, The Wroxall Round. 21km with 487m of ascent; more of a trail type race but with the same precipitous descent into the finish line. Oli completed in 1hr46mins finishing 25th. This gave Oli a series position of 19th over the three races. The front runners putting on some very impressive nippy times with V40s dominating the leaderboard. A fun weekend of committing running. Thank you Paul Chadwick for the recommendation.

Sunday the 14th of September saw the 15th race in the Somerset Series and the third and final race in the Somerset Road Champs at the Burnham-on-Sea half. Conditions were favourable, and with a flat course ahead, there were also a few PBs on the cards.

Yeovil Games
For many people, the Yeovil Games on the 13th September will be their final track race of the season. Plently of Harriers had one final bite at the cherry to see what speed they had left in their legs after a successful summer of racing. Now our thoughts move to the cross country season. Thanks to Yeovil Olympiads for hosting a number of great events again this year.

Gwent League Returning
The return of the Gwent League is just around the corner! Last season we had a record number of athletes competing, and it would be fantastic to build on that momentum. We even fielded a scoring women’s team for the first time in several years.
Race days are always full of team spirit, and the more Harriers we have on the start line, the better the experience for everyone. To encourage as many athletes as possible to take part, the club will once again cover all registration costs.
The fixtures are:
11th October - Margam Park, Port Talbot
8th November - Llandaff Fields, Cardiff
6th December - Blaise Castle, Bristol
7th February - Chepstow Race Course
28th February - Parc Bryn Bach
The registration process for the upcoming cross-country season will remain the same as last year, with one important change: they will be moving from bar code scanning to chip timing (the chip will be embedded in the race number). This should improve accuracy, but it is more expensive. Last year, around 800 numbers issued to clubs went unused, so it is vital that numbers are only allocated to athletes who intend to compete.
To avoid waste, please only register if you (or your child, if you are registering on their behalf) plan to take part in at least one fixture this season. Jon James will once again be handling registrations.
If you expect to compete, please email your details to
