A happy Kim Clark after completing a wet Chard 10K

The January race of the Street 5K series was postponed due to unsafe weather conditions, with a provisional reschedule date set for Wednesday, January 29th. Meanwhile, the South West XC Championships took place on January 4th, with many Harriers participating. Notable performances included Sophie Nicholls earning silver in the U20 women’s category and Wells City Harriers’ U17 women securing first place in the team standings. The Chard 10K marked the start of the Somerset Series, where several Harriers participated, with Stuart Nash finishing 10th overall. The Juniors were treated to an appearance from TeamGB athlete Elise Thorner, who presented awards to promising young Harriers at their final training session of 2024. We also have our next edition of Meet the Harriers for you to read, featuring Dan Williams and don’t forget to check the race calendar at the bottom of the page for upcoming event details.

Street 5K

Sadly we had to postpone the January race of the Street 5K series due to the weather conditions. It was decided that it was likely to be unsafe to race. We currently have Wednesday 29th January as a provisional date for rescheduling. We will send out an announcement if we are able to get the permission for the race to go ahead.

South West XC Championships

The South West XC Championships were held on Saturday, January 4th, 2025, with many Harriers participating. Some proudly donned the black and red stripes on a white vest, representing Somerset. The weather was cold, but overall, the ground conditions were favourable. A few muddy sections added an extra layer of challenge and fun to the cross-country event.

Juniors at their final training session of 2024

The final junior session of the calendar year took place on Monday 16th December, and sessions resumed on 6th January.

We were joined by one of our Harrier Hon Life Members, Elise Thorner, who started her athletics journey some 16 years ago with the Monday sessions and has gone on to compete for TeamGB as a senior.

Elise brought her European Cross Country championships team Bronze medal along to the session to show the assembled juniors before making some presentations to the current crop of talented athletes.

U13 Ruby Shaw received her Gold medal for being 1st Somerset girl home at the recent County XC Championships. Zoe Frost Silver in the U11 girls; Rowan Kelly, Jonah Barrington and Milo Cook for their clean sweep of the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the U11 boys race; and finally Oskar Beck for his Silver medal performance in the U15 boys race.

Elise was a very regular attendee at the Harrier Monday sessions long ago. She actually wasn’t necessarily the quickest runner as a junior but has shown great consistency and improvement over the years to excel at both cross country and competing on the track at Steeplechase.
