As is usual, Wells City Harrier members were out competing hard this past weekend – with a contingent of juniors and seniors going to Llandaff fields, Cardiff, for the cross country on Saturday; and another group racing more locally at the Castle Cary 10k multi-terrain event on the Sunday. Whilst Dan Cahill and Caitlin Carnegie take the plaudits for winning at Sunday’s race, there was a range of good performances at Cardiff, with u13 Hannah Blundy and u17 Elise Thorner finishing well up at Cardiff - brilliant! On Saturday a number of the Harriers competed at the tough British Athletics Cross Challenge match which incorporated the Gwent XC League match, with the best runs by: u13 Hannah Blundy who was 7th finisher in the u13 girls race, but won the embedded Gwent League race over 2.8km in 9.38 (out of 80+ starters); Elise Thorner, 5th u17 (2nd in Gwent League) in 15.37 over 4.4km; Matthew Quarterman 6th u15 in Gwent race 9.55 (10th overall) over 3.2km; and Ollie Dickenson 10th u20 in 19.21 over 6.4km. (note that the event had two combined races - and so some Harriers counted in both; others in just one event!)
They were backed up by a host of other good Harrier runs: Bradley Glover 11th u13 overall (6th Gwent) in 9.07 over 2.7km; Dan Maydew 33rd u15 (29th Gwent) in 10.40 Toby Watson 36th u15 (38th in Gwent) in 10.56; Leo Stockham 52nd u15 in 11.52, over 3.2km; Sam Sommerville 16th (10th Gwent) for the senior men in a time of 28.34 for the 9.5km course - there were 442 senior men running!; Deb Glover 32nd in 24.57 and Katrina Prior 110th (Gwent) in 26.59 over 6.4km. (out of 332 women running!). Next Gwent XC fixture is at Penlan Leisure Centre, Brecon on 11th November. Please contact Simon if you intend to compete so that you know how to enter!(Photo below of Elise at Cardiff XC by Al)
On Sunday, Wells City Harriers Dan Cahill and Caitlin Carnegie were triumphant at the Castle Cary Canter 10k multi-terrain race. The race, part of the 1610 Leisure Centre series of races started out from Ansford Leisure Centre and took the 121 competitors across the fields and along the lanes to Bruton and back. Dan’s time this year was two minutes quicker than last year in 38.03 as he won for the 2nd successive year. U20 Caitlin’s time was 48.00 despite a late night at the Yeovil Olympiads awards evening the night before. Tom Thick had a good run too for 3rd place in 40.36 with Paul Chadwick 19th, 48.31; Nick Weaving, 20th, 48.50; Andrew Pate, 39th, 52.36; Alice Knight, 45th, 55.18. Lapsed member Lucy Heath also had a good run in 28th, 49.13. (Alice, Paul, Andrew & Lucy below - photo by Nick H)
