As new restrictions came in today (31st December 2020) all Harrier organised training sessions are suspended for the time being until we are given the all clear to resume training in large groups. In the meantime, try and keep getting out onto the fields or the roads to maintain fitness, and at least once a week you could try completing the weekly ‘Tuesday’ session either on your own or with a pal. (see training schedule below for January & February). When we are able to hire Strode Sports Centre field again, and UK Govt & England Athletics Guidance allows, we will resume coached sessions – this can’t happen whilst Somerset is in Tier 4. No Harrier Monday or Tuesday group sessions until then.
At this time of the year many Harriers would be preparing for the XC Championships – the South-Wests, the Southerns, the Nationals – whilst others would be toeing the start line perhaps a little hung-over on New Year’s Day at the Chard Flyer 10k multi-terrain event which kicks off the annual Somerset Series. This year there are no races (*) currently on the horizon but with the good news about Covid-19 vaccinations being rolled out maybe we won't have to wait too long and by the summer we may well be spoilt for choice of events to compete in. (*The South West XC Championships will hopefully take place on Sunday 21st February).
In the meantime, here’s a motley collection of Harriers at the Somerset County XC Championships back in 2007 – you can tell from the smiles how much they enjoy the mud! (How many do you recognise? Some are still training & racing with the Harriers).
It's great to see that the friendly spirit that has always been present in the Harriers continues and we hope that all that have joined the Club recently will be able to join in our organised sessions just as soon as we can put them on. Who knows - we might even be back training at the Millfield track by the Spring?
