Juniors Excel for the Harriers Somerset Schools June 2007

There were some excellent performances by junior Harriers competing for their schools in the Somerset Schools Championships held at the Yeovil Arena. The junior championships for Year’s 7 & 8 were held mid-week on a Wednesday in hot and sultry conditions whilst the middle school and senior schools championships were at the same venue on a Saturday. Top Harrier performances were by Laura Parker who won gold in the 1500m, and Henry Brown who gained silver and bronze in 100m and long jump respectively

In the Year 7 (u’13) girls, Charlotte Carpenter was 2nd in her 100m heat in14.85 before progressing to the final where she was disappointed to finish 7th overall in 15.4. She also recorded 33.2 in her 200m heat for 3rd place and then 5th in the final with 31.83. In the 1500m Kayley Kennedy ran a good 5.45 for 3rd place which was a little shy of her best but still excellent given the conditions.

In the Year 7 boys, Henry Brown had a storming run in the 100m sprints with 13.39 for 1st in his heat and then a 13.40 for silver in the final just behind the winner by the thickness of a vest. Henry then went on to gain a bronze for his long jump of 4.29m. Will Norris was 2nd in the 800m to win the same colour medal as at the County Championships. This time he ran 2.35.28 which is a consistent time of late. Will also finished 5th in the long jump with another leap over 4m – this time by 1 centimetre. Tristan Goldsmith achieved 1.20m for the High Jump and then recorded a personal best in the 1500m in 5.08, just a second outside of the medals.

In the Year 8 girls and boys, pick of the performances by Harriers was Callus Batten’s 6th place in the 1500m in 5.19., whilst in the senior age groups we await full results but can report that Laura Parker continued her good run of form with a gold medal winning performance in the Senior Girls 1500m with 4.44
