Cheddar Chase Fell Race

Supporting “Help for Heroes” a new  race on the block appeared last weekend organised by Elly Milln c/o Cheddar Caves & Gorge. A challenging 13km/15km  multi-terrain included ascents of 800 feet, a start plunging down the gorge to lead runners straight into the famous steps with a stiff climb up 274 steps and beyond to track views across the spacious expanse of the Somerset Levels.

Rain filled low clouds and mist ensured the wet rocky terrain kept runners on their toes across the slippery rocks, local Hash runner John Rance enjoyed the dance to win with an impressive time of 1hr 6mins 06 secs, 2nd Paul Crease, 3rd Tom Bloodworth, all 1min apart.

Wells City Harrier veteran Nick Somerville was 5th fresh from the recent Taunton marathon 2hr 55m finish and  (1st V 50) he took the leading Wells honours in a tight finish just a second separating 4th/5th places.

Other WCH’s mastering the tricky terrain were 18th placed Ian Biggs clocking 1.15.16 and another V50 Paul Chadwick with tired legs still found a spring like step to finish 24th in 1.17.56.

Other finishers:-

36th G. Tubridy 1.23.30;  40th A. Pate 1.25.48 ; 53rd P. Wright  1.31.05 ; 70th C. Ross 1.41.01 ; 75th H. Rutter 1.43.47.
