Great racing at the track by our middle distance juniors!

BMC Meet Monday May 4th

The Monday evening track meeting at Millfield saw the British Milers Club host their annual event aimed at helping youngsters from across the region and further afield achieve personal bests at 800m or 1500m races. The majority of the contingent of junior Harriers that attended was not to be disappointed. The weather was a bit cool and there was a fair breeze against the competitors in the back straight. The pace-making by senior athletes was again of a high standard.

U’13 boy Oliver Fox lowered his existing personal best of 4.57 down to 4.54 for the 1500m event, and also saw his team mates Charlie Martin, Luke Prior and James Todd achieve personal bests in a separate race with each taking between 5 and 10 seconds off their previous bests for the distance.  James ran 5.07; Charlie 5.08 and Luke, aged 11, also 5.08.

Amongst the girls at the 1500m Kayley Kennedy, Siobhan Stewart, Abigail Gibbons, and Ellie Kirwan all had good competitive runs. Siobhan was the fastest with her 5.18 pb. Kayley was disappointed with her 5.27, but gets another chance as with the others this coming Saturday at the County Championships. Ellie did just lower her pb with a 5.36 clocking, and Abigail lowered her time to 5.40.

In the 800m races, we saw Emily Smith achieve a personal best bringing her time down to 2.31 for the distance. Also at that distance, Alex Wiltshire had a good early season 800m race and helped his team-mate Sam Bedford achieve a personal best in the same race. Sam came through in the final 50m to record a 2.06 with Alex finishing in 2.07. Cameron Rafferty also took seconds off his 800m best despite competing at three track and field events the previous day as part of the combined Yeovil and Wells team competing at Hereford in the National Young Athletes League. Cam’s time was 2.10.

Coming up this Saturday are the County Athletic Championships at Yeovil Arena where the combined Yeovil and Wells team will again be looking for some good performances. The Championships will see 25 of the Wells based athletes competing for the joint team of 75 athletes in total, with another handful competing for their schools. We wish them well with their efforts.
