Harriers out in force at Glastonbury Races on May 3rd 2009
(were you there?...do you
want to add some detail to this report? We especially want to know if this was
your first race or you achieved a new best for the distance…e-mail news to Paul
or Bob for adding to this page)
It was another busy weekend
for Wells Harriers with over 40 junior and senior members competing on the road
and at track meetings. At the Glastonbury Road Runs there were winning
performances by juniors Curtis Stevens
and Abigail Gibbons in the 3km race,
and Marion Colman was one of the
age-group winners in the main 10km race.
The Glastonbury races covered four different
distances. The junior 3km race was dominated by the club’s Curtis Stevens with
a fantastic winning time of 9.52, some 30 seconds clear of the 2nd
runner. This was one place better than last year and a huge improvement on his
11.18 time from last year. Not to be out done, the 4th runner home
and 1st girl this year was Abigail Gibbons with a very strong run
for 11.35. This followed on from her winning the fun run last year. Also
running well in the 3km race was Callum
Moir in 21st place, 13.46, and Marcus Gibbons, 83rd with 21.29. In the 5km race for
those aged 13 and over, Reuben Whitcombe
finished 11th overall in a time of 20.38, a little shy of his
personal best which is now close to 19.00 following is storming run at April’s
Yeovil 5km.
In the main Glastonbury race there
were 24 senior Harriers competing, including a few making their debut at
racing. Andrew Deamer led the way
with his 36.06 for the 10km which was good enough for 10th place.
Just behind was Steve Masters with
36.45 for 12th place and 3rd Harrier home was James Hardy with 39.21. Paul Knight was 2nd Local
home with his 41.43; whilst Katerina
Prior was 2nd F35 with 44.28. Marion Colman clinched the 1st F55
category with 52.31.

The Glastonbury
race was also the 5th race in this year’s Somerset race Series where there are
currently a number of Harriers leading the way in the men’s rankings, and two
of the women members are also handily placed. Alan Hunter may turn out to be
the main leader when the Series results are updated later this week. The next
race to feature in the Series and the next local race will be the Wells 10km
race, with associated 3 mile and junior races, on Sunday May 24th.
