Harriers aim for promotion up the British League

& another good set of results from the South West League Div 1

Report from July 4th & 5th

Wells Harriers of all ages continued to show their abilities over all athletic disciplines with good performances at local, regional and national events this past week. On Saturday, the combined Yeovil & Wells men’s team contested the 2nd of the British Track & Field Division 4 matches of the season and again won, placing them in pole position for promotion to Division 3 next season. Meanwhile all age groups competed at the South West League Division 1 match on Sunday and came away with 3rd place from the match to leave them neck and neck with 1 match to go to retain last year’s trophy. There were a number of excellent personal bests by Laura Parker, Oliver Fox, and Kayley Kennedy amongst others. Meanwhile, one of the Club’s senior women Jenny Moore won again at the Portland 10 road race, also on Sunday, after a small number of Harriers contested the Charmouth fell race the previous day.

For the track and field athletes, competing in the British League is at the top of the domestic athletics structure. On Saturday, at Exeter, the combined team maintained their 100% record with victory against the other teams. From the Harriers were some of our middle distance and endurance athletes with Eliot Haimes finishing 3rd in the 5000m ‘A’ string with 15.37, whilst Tim Hawkins claimed a similar position in the ‘B’ string with his 16.52 clocking. Jon James also made a return after fitness problems with a 15.33 time running as a guest. In the 3000m Steeplechase Alex Wiltshire ran a solid 10.52 to bolster the team’s accumulation of points. This just leaves two fixtures to go and placings of 4th in both of them would be good enough for promotion.

After Sunday’s South West League Match Div 1 the team has the same number of points after three fixtures as Cornwall AC and Taunton AC for top club honours in the region, with one fixture to go. Whichever of the three teams wins that match will win the League. In the u20 women’s age group Laura Parker continued her good form with victory in the 3000m with 9.51. This was Laura’s 4th personal best of the season over different distances and this time places her in the top 15 at this age group over the distance.

In the u15 boys Ted Ade-Martins made a useful debut with his 27.9 for 3rd in the 200m B string, whilst Jordan Boobyer picked up 3rd place in the ‘A’ discus, and Reuben Whitcombe ran well for 5.45 in the 1500m steeplechase before a 20.33 javelin throw. For the u15 girls, Roo Black was 2nd at both long jump, 4.48m, and at high jump, 1.53m. Josephine Douglas ran a useful 33.5 for 200m, before picking up 3rd in the High Jump ‘B’ string with 1.25m. Kayley Kennedy recorded a personal best at the 800m with 2.30 which was also good enough for 3rd. Following on her great efforts in achieving 2nd place at the National Prep schools 1500m race last Monday Emily Smith competed here at the javelin gaining valuable points for the team

For the u’13s, Oliver Fox again lowered his 1500m best with an excellent 4.52 for victory and moved to 2nd place on the regional power of ten rankings. Charlie Martin ran a good 5.20 in the 1500m B string. Danny Kennedy, still only aged 10, was 2nd in the u13 boys shot with 5.66 for the B string, and also ran 35.9 for the 200m sprint. For the u13 girls, Katy Chinnock high jumped to 1.10m, and also sent the shot out to 5.17m. This was a good set of results by the Monday juniors and there efforts are much appreciated by the team managers and coaches. We now need to ensure a good tur out at the final South West League 1 match on September 6th at Exeter. Please advise the team mangers if you are available so they can start the planning now.

At the Charmouth Fell race to the top of Golden Cap, over 7.8 miles and with 1500 foot of climb, Nick Edwards won the battle of the 2 Harriers that contested with his 73,27 clocking to Geoff Cole’s 75.06. Both knew they’d had a tough run when they got back to the finish line. The following day, Jenny Moore ran away with the women’s prize at the Portland 10 road race with a nippy 62.53 well ahead of the next woman home.

Juniors aged 8 to 14, interested in athletics are reminded that the Harriers 2 day training camp will take place on August 4th & 5th at Millfield track and bookings can be made using the form available on the Harrier website.
