With the 2009 Somerset Series well underway it was Babcary
who hosted the 2nd Race, organised by Gary Tubridy, sponsored by
Avalon Sciences and supported by Wells City Harriers. This years race proved more popular than ever
with over 200 runners entered from across the south west region amongst the
large field were twenty club members and several Junior
runners.
The enthusiastic juniors saw Danny Kennedy lead the way around the
playing fields and win the U11’s closely challenged by 2nd placed
Solomon Chadwick, whilst the U15’s winner Reiben Whitcombe lead 2nd placed and first girl Kayley Kennedy across the line.
The 7 mile main race routed through the quiet lanes had a leading group
take shape to pace each other with overall winner Mitch Piddock
from Bath Triathlon pulling clear by 5 seconds over Paul Rose in 2nd
place who won the vet 40 Category the winning time just a sec under 43mins.
Wells finishers included 9 who featured in the top fifty; heading the
list was super vet Les Lock who has maintained a strong presence in the
Somerset Series over recent years taking 11th position was 3rd
within the age graded results.
Jenny Moore convincingly won the ladies and vet category with an
excellent time of 48:21 which placed her in the top twenty.
Other strong performances saw James Hardy in 15th
place, Steven Smyth 17th,
Ed Willingham 18th, Alan Hunter 23rd ,Paul Chadwick 38th
and Graham Goldsmid 45th.

Proceeds from the race helping towards the Babcary
playing fields, huge thanks go to all involved with a special mention to the
magnificent cakes and tea’s provided by the ladies.
The next race in the Series will be The Butleigh Multi-Terrain on
Sunday 15th March which will include junior races starts 11.30am
from the Butleigh Playing Fields.
