Gilling wins Street 5km race
Wells Harrier Jon Gilling paced himself to victory at
the latest Street 5km race last Wednesday in a time of 16.48. He had company
for the first 4 laps before taking off to get well away from Chris Symons and
Mark Lewis who both finished some 30 seconds back. First home for the women was
Henrietta Syers in 19.38. In the accompanying junior races, Harriers Charlie Martin and Luke Prior ran out winners in the 1km and 2km races respectively.
There were 83 runners, including
18 Harriers, in the main event with Pete
Darton finishing 4th in 17.47 just ahead of 1st
junior, in 5th place overall, Tim Atwell. Ed Willingham was next for the Harriers in 18.26 in 9th
place. Amongst the other Harriers there were age category wins by Jim Smith (1st V60 in
20.38), Carol Buckland (1st
F35 in 21.08), Julia Hector (1st
F45 in 23.24) and Marion Colman (1st
F55 in 24.01).

In the junior races 11 year
old Charlie Martin won the 2km race on his debut at Street in a nippy time of
7.42, with fellow Harrier Callum Moir
also running well for 3rd place in 8.39. In the 1km event 10 year
old Luke Prior stayed just ahead of team-mate Danny Kennedy with 3.34 and 3.56
clockings. Sols Chadwick won the
sprint finish for 3rd place ahead of classmate Jack Hale with both timed at 4.01. Chloe Martin with 4.31 was first girl home with Iona Moir next with 5.05. Mattie Wade also had another good run
with his 5.26.
This is the 20th Anniversary
of the Street Races. A commemorative Technical t shirt will be available for
those competing in 5 races this season for £5, or to Club members for £12.
