Junior Harriers at the track

Following on from the great set of results at the recent County Championships the Harriers Monday session saw competition for its complete range of ages from Year 3 through to Year 10s at last Monday evening’s track and field event.

Events started with the 100m sprints for Year 6 boys and Jamie Dunlop ran out a clear winner with a time of 15.50. For the Year 7/8 boys, Johnny Forsey’s 14.33 couldn’t be bettered, and for the Year 7/8 girls Josephine Douglas again ran well for 14.92 to win. The top 100m race of the night saw last year’s Club junior athlete if the year Henry Brown, who is now just into the u’15 boys category take on u’17 Isaac Whitcombe. Isaac was clocked at 12.74 with Henry just a shade back in 13.01.

In the junior age groups, Chloe Daniels won for the Year 5 girls with 12.96 for the 75m sprints and Finlay Cornford for the boys with 12.35. Georgina Chapman won for the Year 4 girls with 13.55 over the same distance.

In the High jump, County Champion Roo Black once again won with a 1.40m height, with Reuben Whitcombe clearing 1.25m and Emily Smith going over for 1.20m. In the long jump, the older age group winner was Isaac Whitcombe (u’17) with a leap of 5.36m which was better than his jump for bronze at the recent County championships. U’13 Roo Black won for the girls with 4.16m with Leah Bowhay next in 3.89m. Johnny Forsey also recorded a useful looking 4.10m leap. In the younger age group, Georgina Chapman powered out to 3.40m with Solomon Chadwick and Alexi Hampson tieing for second place with their 3.14m leaps.

The 800m race was easily won by u’13 boy Curtis Stevens in 2.27. Curtis is currently near the top of the national rankings with his 1500m times and the County Champion over that distance so it was good to see him make his mark over the shorter distance. In the 300m race for Year 5, Solomon Chadwick just held off a late challenge by Dan Reason with them finishing in 55.71 and 56.21. For the girls Alexi Hampson was the best with an excellent 62.60. For the Year 3 and 4 athletes Charlie Breeze ran well for 69.78 over the same 300 distance.

In the 200m sprints Isaac Whitcombe again held off Henry Brown with 27.35 against 27.95 for a close finish. Likewise Emily Smith just managed to stay out in front ahead of Josephine Douglas for 31.30 against 31.60 in the girl’s event. The final track race saw Johnny Forsey win in 31.68 at 200m.

The evening’s competition was finished off with an excellent tug of war challenge with coaching by the club’s experienced Nick Edwards.

Many thanks to all parents, coaches and other helpers on the night. The next Harrier juniors competition evening is on Monday June 2nd starting at 5.50pm.
