The Quantock Beast multi-terrain race was held last Sunday 6th July, with 6 harriers contesting the 5.7 mile race starting and finishing at Fyne Court, Broomfield. Now in its 8th year, organised by Quantock Harriers the event was race 7 in the 2008 Somerset Series of races.
With heavy rain affecting some parts of the off road sections, the course was somewhat slippery and muddy, yet Chris Burton from Yeovil Town Road Runners made light of the conditions to record a winning time of 36.07, some 30 seconds clear of the chasing field. Super vet Les Lock headed home the Wells team to cross the line in 11th place (2nd V50) in a time of 39.52 followed by another vet Graham Goldsmid ( 41.40 ) placed 15th who had a close finish with Wells winning lady Alice Hector in 16th position. Famed for her triathlon feats, Alice was close on Graham’s heels with just 5 seconds separating them across the line.
The Harriers team included vets Mike Scadding (44th; 46.52), Nick Edwards (53rd; 48.34) and Martin Collins (79th; 53.36), the men’s collective results securing third team overall.
