South West Schools Championships June 21st 2008

There were a number of top performances by Wells Harriers at the South West Schools Track & Field Championships held at Exeter Arena.  Senior girl Laura Parker won the 1500m race in a nippy 4.46, leading home her Wells & Yeovil team mate Nicola Morgan in 2nd with 4.48 and another Somerset athlete from the Taunton area, Naomi Taschimowitz in 4.51, to ensure a 1-2-3 for the County. Laura’s time was just 5 seconds down on her personal best. Also in the same age group, Olivia Steward jumped to 10.03m in the triple jump for 3rd place.

In the inter boys competition Alex Wiltshire ran an excellent 4.32.4 for third place in the 1500m steeplechase. Alex was 2nd just behind the winner Charlie MacLean coming into the final barrier when he mistimed his hurdling and stumbled, allowing the athlete behind him to get ahead. Despite this, Alex’s time is a new personal best by 3 seconds and moves him to 3rd on the power of ten national rankings, with the only faster times this year by the athletes who were immediately ahead of him here.

In the inter girls competition Natalie Parker competed in the 300m hurdles and ran 52.3 for  5th place in her heat which wasn’t quite good enough for the final. Natalie was a little disappointed being some 2seconds down on her personal best but a good performance none the less. There was a host of other team members from the combined Yeovil and Wells team taking part and all performances can now be seen on the results page.
