Gwent XC League fixture Brecon Saturday Feb 9th

Twelve Harriers made the journey to Brecon for the fourth Gwent Cross-country race on Saturday. On a beautiful day, over an excellent course, our teams were depleted owing to many athletes representing Somerset in the South West Schools’ Inter Counties Race.  (See separate report & results). However there were some excellent performances by those that competed.

Danny Kennedy was first to run in the Novice Boys’ Race.  He finished strongly in 15th place.  In the Novice Girls’ Race Abigail Gibbons finished an excellent 5th whilst sister Amy finished strongly in 34th position. Abi consolidates her excellent position near the top pf the overall rankings.

Next to run was Oliver Fox who ran very well to finish 8th in the Under 13 boys race.  Likewise Oliver will be well up in the individual standings after 43 fixtures. The same will be true for Ansford’s Jenny Moore who ran an excellent race to finish 3rd in the Senior Ladies Race and first in her age category. This follows up her winning run at last weeks Blackmore Vale Half marathon which just goes to show her all round endurance and speed.

Reuben Whitcombe was the next to run in the Under 15 boys’ race and had his best run in this League to date finishing high up in 17th position. In the Senior Men’s Race six Harriers ranging in ages from 30 to 60 years were led home by Jon Gilling in 21st place who managed to overtake Andrew Deamer of Wells on the second of the three laps.  Andrew finished in 28th place.  Ed Willingham finished strongly in 67th position, followed by Rod Appleby in 107th with Stuart Marsh close on his heels finishing in 109th position.  Pete Wright rounded up the team in 138th position.

Well done to all athletes, team managers, parents and the minibus driver (!).

The next and final Gwent League fixture is on Saturday March 1st at Blaise Castle, Bristol. Please put the date in your diary now so that we can get as many runners as possible out!
