Harrier juniors jump for joy at track evening July 16th
2007
At the regular Harrier’s
junior monthly competition night at Millfield on July 16th there
were almost 50 enthusiastic youngsters to have a go at a full range of track
and field events prior to awards based on the previous 3 competition evenings
held in the period April to June. For many this was their second competition in
a week following the previous Wednesday’s Mini Olympics.
The evening commenced with
the traditional sprint races, over 100m for Year 6 and above and over 75m for

Assis won for the girls in 14.7, with Jordan
Boobyer winning for the boys in 15.5. For the Year 7 race, Will Norris clocked 14.5 and Isobel
Johnstone 15.2 for respective boys and girls victories. In the fastest sprint
race of the night it was the turn of newcomer Craig Bateman to steal the show with a fantastic 12.4 which if
recorded in a competitive match would see him feature in the top 30 from across
the region according to the power of ten rankings. Not too far behind him was
the other top sprinter of the night, Year 7 Henry Brown, with another 12.6. Leah Bowhay was first for the Year 8/9 girls with 14.7, with
Lamorna Schanche not too far back with 15.3.

just held off a fast finishing Danny
Kennedy, 12.5 to 12.7, whilst Ella
Wade was first for the girls. In the Year 3 race, Alex Sweet ran 13.6 for first place, just ahead of Jonathan Bryer, 13.7. Alana Rizutti was first for the girls
with 14.3.
In the longer, 200m, sprint

the plaudits for the boys with 26.4 to 26.7.
In the 300m race for Years 3
to 5, Harry Jupp won an exciting battle all the way to the line against a
strong Oliver Fox with hardly anything to separate them with times of 51.5 and
51.6.In the 800m race, John Richardson
time-trialled round for a 2.31 clocking whilst Will Norris recorded 2.39 and
Vera Assis was first for the girls with 2.58, despite the windy conditions. Kayley Kennedy ran a well paced 5.42
for 1500m.
In the Long jump, Roo Black won the Year 6 event with
3.69m, with Naomi Marable not too
far back. Will Norris managed to out jump Henry Brown for the Year 7 boys with
4.23m against 4.08, and Kayley Kennedy won for the girls with 3.34m. Despite
carrying a slight injury, Tom Singer
jumped to 3.96m for the Year 8s. Isaac
Whitcombe won the battle of the giants, the Year 10s, with 4.50m to John Richardson’s
4.19m.
For the junior age groups in
the long jump, Oliver Fox and Sols Chadwick had the best marks for the Year 5s
and 4s with 3.65m and 3.29m respectively. Oliver was closely followed by Andrew Bryer, 3.31m, in the Year 5
results, whilst Gareth Bryer was
best for the Year 3 boys with 2.78m. Meanwhile Savannah Blower won the Year 5
