Haselbury Trail race: Gilling runs away with it & Moore gets 2nd!

Jon Gilling proved his durability as well as his rate of recovery by following up a Tuesday evening 1500m track race (at Exeter) with a fantastic run at the latest version of the Haselbury Trail 10km race on Wednesday August 1st. Jenny Moore was 2nd in the women’s race, slightly slower than last year, and a tad disappointed not to have followed up last year’s victory. Jenny admitted afterwards that she had run a steady 20 miler in training the previous Sunday!

Conditions seemed pretty good on the night with the course having pretty much dried out.

Jon ran 38.56 for the undulating two lap course which includes a nice pull of a hill each lap. He was outside of the course record but was almost 2 minutes clear of the second placed runner, Paul Rose of Yeovil Town. Also going well was junior Alex Wiltshire in his first crack at this distance. (Don’t tell Clive!) Alex finished in 41.12 for 5th place overall, and was chased all the way home by a trio of Harriers in 10th, 11th and 12th place. James Hardy won the battle of the three with his 42.17, whilst Tom Lock pipped the British Masters V55 10k champ, otherwise known as his dad Les, for 11th and 12th place with both given the same time of 42.25.

Jenny’s time of 44.25 was a bit down on her previous two outings in 2005 and 2006 on this same course. This time she was beaten by Heather Foundling-Hawker of the Honiton Club. Club Chairman Paul Chadwick enjoyed his 47.03 run for 25th place in the field of 171 finishers, and was then followed home in quick succession by Paul Knight , 38th 47.41, and Nick Edwards, 57th 49.35. Nick was still recovering from his previous weekend’s jaunt at the Minehead Seaview 17. Just over the 50 minute mark was Mike Scadding, 61st 50.27,who beat his son Adrian by one place and over 4 minutes, 62nd 55.02. Martin Collins wasn’t far behind in 55.27, 99th, Kay Franklin 156th 67.05 and Jon Forsyth, 157th 67.48.

Well done all! We now await the updating of the Somerset Series standings and will report on them just as soon as they are available. Results have recently been held up for the Series due to different pints of view concerning how some races have been permitted.
