Well done to the Marathon runners over the weekend of Sept 26th /27th: Jenny Moore was 1st woman home at the New Forest Marathon in 2.57; Clare Prosser was 5th woman home at the Jersey Marathon on the same day, her first marathon in 3:09. Neil Jones ran under 4hours again in his quest to run 100 marathons at New Forest; and the Flying doctor, Andy Hennessy was 3rd at the Jersey Marathon . See Results for report and times.
Great set of results by juniors, seniors and veterans at the South of England Road Relays. Well done to Oliver Fox and Jon James for being gold medal winners. See Full results and report and go to Rogues gallery for photos of a great weekend at Aldershot.

Adrian Marriott celebrated his England call up for the World Trophy Final with a front running victory at the Chippenham Half Marathon on Sunday. The Yeovil based 36 year old pulled clear of the field at the 5 mile mark and stretched his lead to three minutes to beat Dave Mitchinson's record by 39 seconds and claim the bonus and pair of Saucony shoes on offer for a new course record.

Laura goes top of national rankings

One the Club’s u20 athletes, Laura Parker, this past week went top of the National rankings at the 2000m steeplechase when she ran 6.47, some 17 seconds quicker than her previous best. She was competing at the St Mary’s Classic race against some tough opposition. Laura has also recently lowered her 1500m best to 4.31 when she competed at the Manchester Grand prix. This time is some 7 seconds quicker than she has ever run! Well done Laura.

WCH Top of Track and Field Leagues!

Wells City Harriers are celebrating from going top of two of the track and field athletic Leagues that they compete in. This past weekend (June 6th) club members, competing as part of the composite Yeovil and Wells team, competed for the first time in the national British League and won their opening match against tough opposition. This is the first time that a team from Somerset has competed at such a level. This follows on from them going to the top of the regional South West League Division One after 2 matches so far this season. For the full story see the report.

Crewkerne Road Race Record Falls

In the 29th running of the Crewkerne Road Race Yeovil's Adrian Marriott broke the course record clocking 48 minutes 10 seconds on this demanding course. With blue skies and soaring temperatures adding to the challenge the race started in Market Square before heading out along the hilly country roads to Hinton St George before looping through Dinnington and heading back to Crewkerne. Marriott broke clear of the pack at the 3 mile mark and continued to stretch his lead to the finish to add his name to the distinguished roll call of winners of this west country classic.

Adrian Marriott back to form with a win

Yeovil based marathon runner Adrian Marriott returned to racing from an injury layoff with a comfortable win at the Egdon Easy Multi Terrain Race on Saturday 23rd May. This was Adrian's first race since early December so he was happy to follow the pace set by the leaders in the early miles of this popular race in Weymouth  promoted by Egdon Heath Harriers. At halfway Adrian hit the front and picked the pace up to come home with a winning time of 32mins 49 secs for a more than satisfactory return to racing.

Tickner races Gebrselassie and Parker races for British Universities

Harrier Ben Tickner raced against Haile Gebrselassie at the recently televised Manchester 10k. The former World Champion was hoping to break the all-comers record for a 10k race in the UK but windy conditions were against the attempt and Haile had to settle for victory in 27.39. Ben ran a storming first 5k in 14.25 before the wind also slowed his time and he crossed the line in 29.58. The same event saw Usain Bolt set a new world best time of 14.35 for 150m sprint down one of Manchester’s main roads.

Meanwhile Laura Parker was selected for the British Universities team at the Loughborough International match and lined up in the 3000m steeplechase event, recording  a new personal best of 11.02 against athletes representing GB, England, and Scotland. Her time places her 7th on the national rankings for the event despite the fact that Laura is still u’20. Laura achieved selection following her silver-medal performance at the recent British Universities Championships.

The Fellsman 9th to 10th May

The Fellsman is a 62 mile high level traverse over very hard rugged moorland.  The event climbs over 11,000 feet in its path from Ingleton to Threshfield in the Yorkshire Dales.  There were some very strong winds at the start of the event on Saturday and some very heavy rain and hail around mid-afternoon to dampen competitors’ spirits.  The rain did stop and wind abated and it was almost pleasant afterwards.  Vince Simmonds (WCH) finished in joint 127th in a time of 20hrs 37mins; 1st man was Jez Bragg in 10hrs 50mins and 1st lady was Sarah Rowell in 13hrs 45mins.  There were 382 started at Ingleton and 238 finished the event at Threshfield.

A great event with some stunning scenery - even more dramatic when the skies are dark!  Don't worry about times just completing the route is enough

Wells team top at County Track & field Championships - 25 members have a great set of results - Alf Tupper – ‘Tough of the track’ - seen racing!

The combined Yeovil and Wells team won the overall team rankings at the County Track and Field Championships, winning 86 medals in total, 36 of the gold variety. Best individual performances by Wells Harriers came from u13 Oliver Fox in the 1500m, u15 Emily Smith at the same distance, and also by Laura Parker for the u20 women at 800m. See Results for all the details.

Well done to the 17 Wells & Yeovil junior athletes who competed for their County at the recent English School cross-country championships. Best individual performances were by Nicky Morgan, 16th in the senior girls age group, and by Emily Smith, 40th in the Junior girls event despite being at the younger end of the age-group. Other notable performances by Harriers were recorded by Alex Wiltshire and John Richardson in the Senior Boys, and by Curtis Stevens in the Junior Boys races. See report under Results and Rogues Gallery for some photos.
Harriers dominate in Gwent XC League.
After the 5th and final XC match at Carmarthen we await a final decision as to whether we will win the League’s coveted ‘Best set of junior team results’ Trophy (the Dragon) – Carmarthen Harriers, winners for the past 4 years, are apparently neck and neck with us. Whether we finish 1st or 2nd this is no mean achievement against 30 or so other Clubs.
We won the overall League awards for the Minor Boys (u11s) team and the u’13 Boys team, and the Senior Men gained promotion for the second year in succession. The u17 women’s team was 2nd overall. We wait to see where we finished in the u13 girls team rankings as these had not been calculated when we left the match. (fingers crossed). Individual medallists at end of season: Luke Prior (u11b) 2nd ; Jemma Jones (u13g) 2nd; Oliver Fox (u13b)  2nd ; Matthew Cole (u13b) 5th; George Harris (u15b) 5th ; Leighanna Chappell (u17w) 3rd . 1 or 2 others were just outside of the medals.  Full report under results and photos on Rogues Gallery.
Harrier Frank Tickner was 2nd at the Inter-Counties Cross Country race held at Nottingham on Saturday March 7th. He was outsprinted in the final 200m by Andy Vernon, but as the race doubled up as the trial for the British team, Frank has done enough with his performance to be selected for the 4th year in succession for TeamGB for the World XC Championships. The 2009 Championships will be held on March 28th at Amman, Jordan and we wish him and his fellow team-members good luck.

Angela Thomas Memorial Run - Boxing Day 2008

Over 80 runners and walkers braved the elements in sub zero conditions to take part in the traditional Boxing Day run at Butleigh and collectively raised over £400 to support Marie Curie Foundation and Macmillan Trust. Many thanks to all who donated and thanks to the Woods family for their post-run hospitality.

Tickner to race for Team GB again

Wells City Harrier’s Frank Tickner raced himself into selection for Team GB on Saturday when he finished 2nd in the trial race for the forthcoming European Cross Country Championships. Frank and his elder brother Ben who have been members of the Harriers for the past 10 years will be pulling on the Team GB vest for the 3rd year in succession.

Frank finished 2nd to Steve Vernon in the 9.8km race held at Sefton Park Liverpool following a fast and furious sprint finish to the line with just 3 seconds covering the first 4 runners’ home. Only the first three are guaranteed selection for the European XC Championships which are due to take place on December 14th at Brussels.

Frank’s brother Ben was also in good racing form and followed up his previous weekend’s nippy road 10km with 10th place at Liverpool. Ben had finished in a lifetime personal best the previous week at the Leeds 10k in 29.32. Ben has also previously competed for Team GB.

This will be the 3rd year that Frank has competed in either European or World XC Championships and has also competed for Team GB on the track. Most recently he raced for Team GB at the World Championships in March 2008 and was cheered on by a large contingent of Harriers that made the journey to support him and the rest of the team.

Harrier in close finish at Parliament Hill

Yeovil marathon runner Adrian Marriott returned to his cross country roots on Saturday with a strong run to 4th place in the second race of the Saucony England Cross Challenge at Parliament Hill Fields. On a cold, clear day Marriott was in the leading group until mid way through the race when eventual winner Darred Deed made his winning break. With points awarded in each race of the series the final standings will be determined after the National Championships on 21st February. Adrian will be at Tri UK in Yeovil on Saturday 29th Nov from midday with the Saucony ShoeLab offering free running gait analysis and coaching advice for runners of all standards as well as special offers on running kit.

3 Marathons in 9 days!

A Harrier with a target of 100 marathons before the 2012 Olympics is Neil Jones who recently ran not 1 but 3 marathons in 9 days! And he is well on target after his hat trick started with the Dartmouth Vale held at Newton Abbot where he finished in 4hrs 14 mins along with fellow club member Nick Edwards who was a mere 10 mins behind. 6 days later a wet and windy trip to Snowdonia saw Neil complete his second 26.2 miles around the mountain course in just over 4 hours, and then followed up with the Dublin marathon just 48 hours afterwards thus clocking up number 62, so just 38 to go by 2011! Good luck.

Harrier 4th in Geneva Marathon

Yeovil's Adrian Marriott took a hard fought 4th place in the Geneva Marathon on Sunday. Lining up against 5 top African runners Marriott was always going to have his work cut out to challenge for the win and so it proved as the Kenyans and Ethiopians opened a big lead in the first half of the race before the searing pace started to take its toll. Meanwhile Marriott was running a more conservative race leading a second smaller group until by half way he was on his own in 5th place and chasing hard in pursuit of the leaders.

The marathon is an unforgiving event in the closing kilometres as Kenya's Peter Muthama found out to his cost as Marriott stormed past him with less than five kilometres to go. Despite a strong finish past the famous fountain in Geneva Marriott was unable to catch the next finisher and make that final step onto the podium.

Promotion to the British League and Champions of the South West

Fantastic week for the Harriers at the Track and on the road - September 15th 2008

Wells Harriers have been celebrating on a number of athletic fronts this past week. The combined team with Yeovil Olympiads has been crowned champions of the South West Athletics League Division 1 after winning the fourth and final match last Sunday. This was then followed by a great performance by the senior Men’s team in the Southern Men’s League Div 1 where promotion to the British Athletics League was achieved for the first time in the Club’s history. Meanwhile on the road the Club provided the individual winners of the Yeovil 5km Race Series.

At the fourth and final South West League match at Exeter the combined team made it 4 wins out of 4 and once again had a number of the Harrier’s Monday junior training group competing. For the u’13 girls Roo Black had a great day winning the Long Jump with her excellent 4.31m. This was a personal best and pushes Roo up to 11th on the Regional power of ten rankings. She also finished 2nd in the shot put with a good 7.18m, another best and into 17th on the regional rankings.

For the u’13 boys Johnny Forsey had a busy afternoon too, winning the B string 100m in a nippy13.8 to improve his best by almost half a second and move to 27th on the regional rankings. Johnny also won the B string sprint Hurdles in 14.6, another best and went to 21st on the regional rankings. In the javelin he threw 20.16m for 3rd place, another personal best before helping the sprint relay team to first place. Curtis Stevens easily won the B string 800m in 2.30.5, not far short of his personal best which sees him at 11th in the region. Curtis also jumped a new best of 1.30m in the High Jump to place him at 30th in the regional rankings.

At the Southern Men’s League Play off at Abingdon on Saturday the team worked hard to ensure promotion to the prestigious British League. This was the 4th year out of 5 that the Yeovil & Wells has been pushing for a place in the higher League. With the Harriers traditionally providing many of the middle distance and endurance athletes the effort this time was good enough. Pete Darton and Dave Stanfield answered late calls by the team managers when other athletes had to drop out with injury.

Meanwhile at the midweek Yeovil 5km road race, the final race saw victory by top Harrier veteran Jon James for the men and by Anna Lewis for the women. This helped seal their victories in the overall Series where their best 5 performances were taken into account. Dave Stanfield and Carol Buckland also picked up the Series V40 and F35 awards. Jon’s winning time on the night was 15.46 whilst Anna recorded a nippy 18.28. Both Jon and Anna will be in the Harrier’s teams at the forthcoming South of England Road Relays.

Other good performances at the 5km race were by Carol Buckland, setting a new personal best of 20.34; Jack Bancroft in 5th place with 16.48 and Rob Parfitt in 9th in 17.02. 17 Harriers competed in the field of 121. Attention switches next month to the winter 5km race series held around Street where the Harriers will once again host the monthly race starting on Oct 8th. This will be the 20th year of the Street 5km races, and yet again there will also be races for juniors over 1km (age 9 & 10) and 2km (ages (11 and 12). Details on the Harrier’s website.

Meanwhile final times and positions are eagerly awaited from the Bristol Half Marathon where a number of Harriers were having a go at the classic distance amongst the mass field of 15,000 runners. Next weekend sees the multi-terrain runners making for the King Alfred’s Torment race, whilst an intrepid band of the Club’s Fell Runners once again go to the Isle of Wight for the South of England Fell Running Championships comprising 3 races in 2 days.

The following weekend then sees over 30 of the Club’s athletes competing at the South Of England Road Relays, and another set of the Club’s marathon runners making final preparations for a round of Autumn marathons, including the Loch Ness Marathon in Scotland

Well done all that have competed, and good luck to all with the forthcoming races!

Update on Adrian Marriott

Yeovil marathon runner Adrian Marriott has been completing his preparation for the forthcoming Geneva Marathon with a spell of training at altitude in the Swiss Alps.

Marriott's recent victories in the Davos Mountain Half Marathon and the earlier Swiss National Championships earned him an invitation to join the elite athletes in Geneva on 28th September. There he will take on 3 time defending champion Tesfaye Eticha of Ethiopia along with two sub 2:20 French athletes and several experienced Kenyan runners in attempt to improve on his best time of 2 hrs 18mins 57 seconds from 2007. Race Director Francois Salamun said "we are very happy to have Adrian in our race this year".

Its the second time this summer that Marriott has trained at altitude in St Moritz after a successful trip in July to help Britain's Olympic Marathon 6th placer Mara Yamauchi with her preparations for Beijing. He will be hoping that the mountain air has a similar impact on his performance in Geneva.

Update on Adrian Marriott

At the UK Championships and Olympic Trials held at Watford on 14th June Adrian placed 11th of the British athletes in a personal best time of 29 minutes and 47 seconds.

Harridan Marathons Challenge

Harrier Neil Jones completed yet another marathon, in fact back-to-back marathons, within 48 hours when he finished both the Stornaway on the Isle of Lewis and then on the Isle of Harris, having travelled to the Outer Hebrides over last week's Bank Holiday. With outstanding weather conditions, wall-to-wall sunshine and an easterly wind, Neil breezed through a memorable weekend and he felt privileged to have competed in the first marathons to to be run in this far corner of the Scottish Islands.

Yeovil based marathon runner Adrian Marriott has been invited to compete in the UK Championships 10,000m and Olympic Trials at Watford on 14th June following an excellent 4th place (and 2nd British athlete) at the recent Reebok Bristol 10km Road Race. A specialist marathon runner, Marriott was ranked 5th in the UK in 2007 with a time of 2:18:57.

Wells City Harriers Committee Annual Report 2007/08 – as reported at the AGM

The work of the Harriers committee on behalf of the membership over the past 12 months to May 2008 offers an insight into how the Club functions and provides training and competition opportunities for a broad range of ages and abilities at all athletic disciplines. It also reflects how the Club ensures that all sections, juniors and seniors, fun runners and elite athletes, benefit from the Club.

Secretary – Lucy Chard: My first year as secretary has been a real learning curve.  I have had to develop an understanding of the functions of both the Wells City Harriers and the wider network of associated running organisations.  Thank you to the rest of the committee for their support and members for their patience. We met 4 times during the year as a committee and a summary of each meeting now gets added to the website to help ensure that all members are kept in touch with committee decisions.

Membership secretary – Angela Thomas: 2007/8 was the first year of England Athletics and affiliation.  We sent our database of 261 members and paid £50 to register and £3 for competing adults.  Most competing adults received a registration card and number from them, but all should have.  We have already paid our £50 registration fee for 2008/9 and will soon be able to access our own database to amend it and then will pay £5 for each competing member. This year so far to May 1st we have 100 fully paid up members, which includes 3 social members, with a number of further renewals still coming in.  We also have 12 life members.

Competition opportunities: Harriers of all ages are out taking part in athletic events ranging from fun runs to international events across the entire calendar at track and field, cross country, road and off-road running, and fell running. This spans local, regional and national events. The Club creates the formal and informal team management arrangements to ensure that this can happen as effectively as possible.

Team Managers report for Cross Country and Road Relays – Clive Thomas:  Starting with the South of England 6 stage RR which was held in Aldershot in late September the team finished a disappointing 4th after being 2nd in 2005 and 2006.Frank Tickner ran the fastest individual time of the day and second fastest of all time with 17min 11sec. In the National 6 Stage RR at Sutton Park, Birmingham, a stronger team had their best ever finish of 8th with  Frank again producing an outstanding run to crack 17min for the second fastest time overall.

Two weeks later in early November the team finished 5th in the National Cross Country Relays with Frank running the fastest lap of the day and the 3rd fastest ever.In December Frank competed for GB in the European XC Championships but was ill the day before and was a disappointed 37th.

In January we had our highest ever team finish in the Southern Cross Country Championships – 5th with again Frank winning his first ever Senior Southern title by over half a minute. Unfortunately he injured himself in the process and was unable to defend his National XC title.(held in early March) where a depleted WCH team finished 28th.However Frank was selected to run in the World XC where off just three weeks training after injury,  he finished 3rd GB in 73rd place

In late March the 12stage team contested the Southern Championships and although not at full strength had their best ever placing of 7th and finally last month in the National 12 stage we again had a best ever performance to finish 12th with Frank recording the 2nd fastest short stage time of the day.

07/08Team Performances:

Southern 6-stage RR  4th; National 6-stage RR  8th; National Cross Country Relays  5th; Southern Cross Country Champs 5th; National Cross Country  28th;

Southern12-stage RR  7th;  National12-stage RR   12th

Gwent XC League & Junior track team performances – Paul Chadwick:  The 2007/08 XC & road relay season was our most successful ever. We were initially a little daunted by the idea of travelling across to Wales for 3 of the 5 Gwent fixtures but our decision to go was vindicated by some excellent individual and team performances that acted as a stepping stone for school, County, regional and national championship races for all ages. We officially competed for the first time as Wells & Yeovil in the Gwent League.

The number of juniors competing at track and field events last summer 2007 was an increase on the previous summer and this new season looks like again there will be a steady flow of runners, jumpers and throwers to be part of the composite Yeovil & Wells team. In 2007/08 there were 4 new coaches trained to Level 1, and 1 existing coach moved up to Level 2, with 1 other in the process of gaining a Level 3 award. We are always on the look out for new coaches and still need volunteers to become Level 1 coaches for the Wednesday night sessions, and for further volunteers especially to help coach throws and jumps at the track.

Off-road and fell-running The Club continues to enter teams in a number of multi-terrain relay events including the Wessex Ridgeway, Cotswold Way and Parrett Trail and provides the structure for many runners to join together to enter half-marathons, marathons and other road and off-road events. This year 14 members had a go at the London Marathon and another handful have tackled other marathons.

Press Officer – Peter Wright: Continued coverage within the weekly local pages of the Journal has been maintained consistently during the last year. Duplicate reports have been drafted into the web site and it is particularly satisfying to expand the successes of the club via that excellent facility.

It is worth repeating the vital close working relationship that exists with the local sports editor Clare Daniels who has always supported athletics and the Harriers role. Photos are a proven winner and many thanks to all who have taken cameras with them but more importantly have managed to gather those weary runners young and old together to give their best post race shots. Report space allocation has to be respected and some weeks imported pieces have been fairly reduced and occasionally not appeared but this is rare.

Receipt of reports has been very good and whilst I’m the recipient/ handler many reports generated have been purely at the hands of the likes of Clive T., Paul C., Kaye W., Sue C., and apologises if I have missed naming others, however please put words together and forward accordingly it keeps the Harriers very much at the start and finish line.

Kit manager – Tim Hamblin: I have sold vests, several of the new hoodies and continue to try to reduce the amount of old stock. All Club items are currently in stock. Prices were increased for adult vests this year but are still only cost price like all other items.

Newsletter Editor- Dave Stanfield: Our club covers a broad range of athletics disciplines, age groups and standards and the newsletter tries to convey this range and is only as good as the content.  The credit for the content has to go to the members – well done to you all and keep up the good work.  If anybody has any ideas on changes, or perhaps would like to include articles, then pass it to me and I will try to include it.

Child Protection Officer & Schools Liaison- Kaye Watts: CRB checks are up to date and kept with a file on all coaches at the Junior Track sessions.  The file includes – details such as a photocopy of their licence, CRB, any certificates for 1st aid and contact/emergency details.  This file is kept with the weekly register. The latest letter for juniors together with new flyers will soon be sent to schools.

Tuesday night rep – Ian Eddy: reported numbers are still around 20-30 and again passed on his thanks to Clive, Jon James and Marion Colman for their coaching. Newcomers to the Club are encouraged to come along and try a session at Millfield school track.

Wednesday night rep – Jim Benson: reported that these sessions held from Wells Rugby Club had continued to develop with various paced groups for runners of all ages and abilities who are either just running to stay fit or preparing for local or major races, such as the London Marathon. Arrangements for the long distance Sunday runs often get made at the Wednesday sessions and are then promoted via the website. The recent Running Sisters course was also a huge success with 40 women taking part over the 10 week programme – well done to Julie and Lorraine.

Webmaster – Bob Powell: Website activity now pretty well settled.  Average number of hits on the site is now in excess of 160,000, compared to about 30,000 a year ago.  Many thanks to those who directly maintain their own parts of the site, making the Webmaster’s job a lot easier.  Many thanks to Andrew Deamer for getting us onto a much more reliable service provider.  There is still scope for improvement, and positive suggestions are always welcome.

April 2008 Round up by Paul Chadwick

As usual it has been a very busy time for Wells Harriers this past month. 14 members successfully competed at the London Marathon with some outstanding times, including a 2.51 by Clare Martin and a 2.38 by Al Jones, and a fantastic 5.22 for V70 Haydn Davies. A couple of other members had good runs at the Shakespeare Marathon.

For the juniors in particular it has been an exciting start to the track and field season with a number making good debuts at the SW League Division One Match and helping the combined Yeovil & Wells team to victory against the 7 other clubs. Pick of the athletes was Shepton’s Curtis Stevens (u’13) who ran 4.57 for the 1500m to go into the top ten nationally for that time.

For the seniors, the men achieved their best ever placing at the 12 stage road relays finishing in 12th place at the national event under the management of Clive Thomas.

The Club has also successfully held its 6th ‘Running Sisters’ course over the past 10 weeks or so – well done to the organisers and to the 30+ women that have turned out to get, or keep, fit and enjoy running. The Wednesday group have also started the monthly pub runs with a run from Panborough.

Looking ahead, the Wells Fun Run Committee are now putting the finishing touches to their arrangements for the races at the end of May, whilst juniors in particular are getting ready for the County Track and Field Championships on May 10th. There are also 2 teams entered in the Wessex Ridgeway Race due to take place on May 18th.

Shakespeare Half and Full Marathon

It was an unexpectedly hot day last Sunday for 3 club members participating in the Shakespeare Half and Full Marathon starting in Stratford on Avon.  The event is organised by the local Rotary Club in aid of local charities but has been going for over 25 years and is very well supported both on and off the field.  There were 1845 finishers in the half - v40 Andrew Pate finished 259th in 1:42:08.  There were 748 finishers in the full marathon - Dave Stanfield v40 wearing long leggings to support a calf strain, managed to finish within his target time in 3:42:39 in 224th place; this was Dave's first full marathon and despite being completely wiped out at the finish, should be pleased with his first attempt.  The more experienced marathon runner Sue Cook v45, again recovering from a calf strain, was happy to complete within her adjusted target time of 'anything under 4 hours and I'll be happy'.  Sue struggled after 20 miles but although she slowed significantly in the last 6, managed to complete the course in 03:59:10 in 360th position.  Chris and Tatiana Storie and Lucy Chard and Dave's partner Debbie were the support team which was much appreciated but the wiltering participants!

Tickner to represent GB

Frank Tickner has been selected to compete for Team GB at the World XC Championships at the end of March. This is the 3rd year in succession that Frank has gained selection for these Championships. Frank has also competed for Team GB at the European XC Championships in the past 2 years. See Report on the Trial Race in the Results section.

Well done!

Welsh National XC Championships Feb 24th 2008

Hail the Champion! Harrier Clare Martin swept to victory at the Welsh National XC Championships held at Singleton Park, Swansea on February 24th. Clare competed over the 6.6km course by going to the front of the field from the start and never looked back. She ran away from the chasing pair and won by over a minute from Catherine Dugdale who had previously won the trophy for the past 8 years. Well done Clare!

English National Cross Country Championships Feb 23rd 2008

Well done to the excellent Harrier performances at the National XC Champs at Alton Towers! Pick of the day was the 23rd place achieved by Nicola Morgan in the U17 women’s’ race. Anna Lewis, in her first cross country race for the club, also ran well to finish 108th out of the field of 495 finishers in the senior women’s race.

In the men’s race the Harriers were without their GB international runners on the day with both Tickner brothers injured, and with Adrian Marriott ill, and all will now be hoping to be well and fit to line up at the trial race for the World XC Championships race in a few weeks time. This was a great disappointment especially for Frank Tickner who was unable to defend his senior men’s title of last year.

Those who competed in the men’s team however turned in great performances. The men’s team finished in 28th place overall and was led home by Eliot Haimes with Jon James, Al Jones, Jon Gilling, Matthew Lewis and Dave Stanfield all having excellent runs.  See Results for full report.

The final Club XC fixture for 2007/08 is at the Gwent XC league on March 1st. Contact Paul or Clive for full details or see the Fixtures page.

There was another good road racing evening last Wednesday (13th Feb 08) at the Harrier’s Street 5km race.16 Harriers taking part formed a large sector of the field with  Stephen Rose of the Team Bath club swooping  to take first place in 16.36 after being led around the 5 lap course by the Club’s Andrew Deamer for the first half of the race. Andrew’s time of 17.16 was still well clear of 3rd place Clive Richards of Clevedon AC. Andrew picked up 1st V40 award on the night.

Once again the leading woman home was the Club’s u’17 Nicola Morgan, this time in a relatively modest, for her, 19.31 but again well clear of any rival. Linda Cummins of Yeovil TRR was 1st F35 home, whilst Tim Atwell of MAC was fist junior home, Martin Lascelles of Yeovil TRR 1st V50, and David Rose of City of Bath 1st V60.

In the junior races harrier Vera Assis once again proved to be the fastest fo the girls over 2 laps with an excellent run, whilst team mate Curtis Steven was just edged out for 2nd place in the boys race. In the 1 lap race Harrier Abigail Gibbons was a comfortable winner for the girls whilst Nathan Smeeton won for the boys.

In the overall standings with just the final race to go Harriers Nicola Morgan and Andrew Deamer lead the female and male standings.

 Results

Mid February 2008 Round Up

Harriers have been out competing in a whole host of road, multi-terrain and off-road races over the past month. For juniors the two regional Championships (South West and South of England) along with the Schools Championships (Somerset & South West Schools) have been the most important. For those in training for a spring marathon the long Sunday runs have been interspersed with half-marathons on the road (Blackmore Vale) or the equivalent over multi-terrain (Dursley Dozen). Reports on all of the Harrier performances can be found on the results page.

Looking ahead we have a strong squad of senior men and 1 of the top juniors, Nicola Morgan, competing at the National XC Championships on Feb 23rd and we wish them well there. We also see the first of the Harrier supported races for 2008 coming up with the Babcary race, over 7.5miles of undulating road, on Feb 24th and the Butleigh multi-terrain race (7 miles) on March 9th. The Butleigh race is the 2nd in the Somerset Race Series 2008; the first being at Hestercombe this coming Sunday (17th). Can Harriers Jon Gilling & Jenny Moore defend their Series titles?  And for those who like their runs long the Grizzly will not disappoint them on March 9th.

The Club Social on Leap Year Day eve (Feb 29th) will see various presentations, as well as buffet & live music. Tickets from any committee member at £6 for juniors and £12 for adults (£30 for family of 4). Nominations for the Bog seat please to the chairman Paul, so that he can avoid getting it again this year! & Did you know that the Street Race on Wed March 12th will actually be the 114th edition of the race!

Paul Knight was to only Harrier to travel to Sand Bay, nr Weston Super Mare on New Years Day to take part in the annual Hangover Ten (10k road race). Paul finished 31st out of 171 finishers in a time of 41:22 nearly 9 minutes behind the winner Philip Parry from Bristol & West who has won the event for the past few years.

This follows a creditable performance on 23 December in the Wellington Monument race where, on a much hillier course involving over 1000 ft of ascent, Paul finished in a time of 43:32 placing him 35th out of 203 finishers and 9th in his age category (MV40) closely followed by Simon Chamberlain 50:01 (95th) and Alasdair Bell 53:06 (128th)

The festive celebrations found their way to Stoke St. Gregory on Boxing day with the annual 10km race known as "The Stampede" routed around the quiet, flattish lanes of this sleepy hamlet. Casting away the Xmas cobwebs were several Harriers contesting honours with numerous other South West Clubs, Bristol's Vet Phil Parry winning in an impressive 32.25. Top thirty places for four harriers saw Matthew Lewis leading the way home in 12th place clocking 37.27, whilst veteran Dave Stanfield in 19th position finished in 38.22. Anna Lewis in 28th was a single place ahead of Pete Darton, clocking 40.14 and 40.38 respectively.  Others finishes included Nick Edwards 45.22, Martin Collins 55.06 and Declan Rogers 60.26.

The Club had 4 places allocated for the 2008 London Marathon.  The successful members are Kim Sadd (debut), Haydn Davies, Karl Watts and Les Lock, who is the fastest of this group to date with a sub 3 hours time to his credit. Other entrants include Martin Bailey, Jenny Moore who has a 3.00.03 marathon time to beat, Club Secretary Lucy Chard, Adrian Marriott who has a PB 2.18, and, the youngest, Tom Lock who, intriguingly, will be alongside his dad; any bets on who will finish ahead?

More on the Cotswold Way Team Relay from Sue.

Thanks to everyone for volunteering to run in this year's Cotswold Way Relay - hope you all manage to stay injury free until the day, if not please ring ASAP and we'll call on one of our budding reserves!

Please read the links on the website (City of Bath AC) especially rules and route clarifications!
  • Breakdown of the teams opposite
  • We have a couple of new faces this year - please give them your support as they run their debut Cotswold Way leg!
  • I trust you'll all recce your legs (wo betide anyone who doesn't!  or in Viv's case, who does!)
  • Please team up with others for transport on the day if you can to avoid too many cars on the roads.
  • Does anyone fancy supper together in a pub on route home afterwards?  We have tended not to go to the official gathering afterwards as it can get crowded and a lot of hanging around.  Your feedback would be appreciated.
  • Any queries in the meantime call me (ladies captain) 01749 342674 or Terry (men's captain) 01458 833832.

See you around and good luck!

Bob Martin was thinking about entering the Langport Triathlon, but he may be reconsidering. Here's what he said:

Not sure a tri entry is a good idea at this stage as just passing through the Barossa & Clare valleys & sampling the vineyards which is NOT conducive to fitness. Four weeks to get to Darwin [from Adelaide], then Bali for 3 weeks holiday & home mid-Aug. Running most days but not much else athletically speaking. Cheers, Bob

Did you hear the one about the two Harriers (who shall remain nameless) who went racing at the weekend?

James (fiddlesticks - sorry J) went to Babcary but had to stop to retie his shoes not once, not twice, not .. ok - FIVE times!

The other (hello Julia! oops - that's given the game away) went to the Dursley Dozen and FORGOT HER NUMBER. I mean, how hard is that? It's written across your front, for goodness sake.

A couple of Bog Seat Award candidates, perhaps?

After an exhaustive search, the results from the Street 5K in October have at last been found. After various excuses ("I forgot them", "my dog ate them", "my Dad said I didn't have to do them" and "what race?"), they were eventually found lurking near the very back of a computer, which is now helping the webmaster with his enquiries..
