Weekend Runs

Long Weekend Runs

There are several small groups that run on a weekend, Most of these are aimed at runners aiming to build up endurance over longer runs, and at some tumes of the year individual members who lead these groups may be planning on running a Marathon or Half-marathon and will be using the weekend run as part of that training. These are usually 1.5-2 hours

Each one is open to whoever wants to turn up - no obligation and no fee!  This is a very informal arrangement, and people can do their own thing by mutual arrangement. In addition there is from time time Yomping organised by some Club members (see below)

If you want to lead a run for your fellow Harriers, please pick a date and time and let This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. know.

All runs will be on the Events & Results Calendar

What is Yomping?

This was originally a Royal Marines term describing a long distance march carrying full kit. It is a mixture of march and double march.  It has been suggested that the term YOMP is an acronym for ‘Your Own Marching Pace’.

How do we Yomp?

We interpret this as a mixture of walking (at the quickest pace we can) and jogging. The majority of each route we do is off-road.  We tend to walk the harder bits (hills, sticky muddy bits) and jog the easier bits.

This technique is ideal for those new to running.  We are currently yomping 3 - 4 miles, but hope to increase this distance over time.  As long as you can run for 30 mins you will be able to do this yomping.

It is optional as to whether you’d like to wear a backpack!  Some more experience runners do come along, but are usually wearing full kit (as in Burgen measured to a specific weight!)  This is ideal where running partners are differing in ability with the more able partner having the option to carry weight/backpack.

Expect to be out for a minimum of 1 hour. There is no charge for joining us :)
