Baltonsborough; 5 & 1.5 Mile Road Races, and fun run.

 

The August Bank holiday Monday saw a large turnout of runners taking part in the annual races at Baltonsborough inconjunction with the Baltonsborough Show.

 

On one of the hottest days in recent years numerous local athletes and club runners turned out to contest the 5 mile undulating course with a strong entry for the Junior race with 35 runners. (Photo of junior race start by Nellie Clothier)

Despite the hot conditions Andrew Hennessy (Wells City Harrier) scorched around the 5 mile course to record another win on home soil clocking 28min 25 secs, having flown in from East Anglia to take part. In second place was another Veteran 40 runner Paul Card from Yeovil Town Road Runners who finished in 30:08 over a minute clear of 3rd placed Kevin Watkins.

Pippa Howarth from Yeovil was the winning female in a time of 37:36, Wendy Mahon (V35) and Megan Risca (Wells) crossed the line with identical times 38:36 being placed 2nd and 3rd females.

 

There were a considerable number of veteran runners across all age category’s with some outstanding performances, Ted Sprules (Frome) Vet 60, in 6th place overall in 33:05, Len Horlock V70 36th place in 42:58, Lesley Westgate from Taunton AC the leading V55 female.

 

The Junior 1.5 mile race provided some close running to the finish line with 14 year old’s Archie Roy Tyler 1st (8:43) winning ahead of 2nd placed William Carr, with 9 year old Rocco Sughayer 3rd less than 10 second adrift. Isabelle Walker headed the junior females winning in 12:59, 2nd was Millie Lawson and 3rd Olivia Heath.

 

The 1.5 Mile fun run saw females Donna Phillips 1st and Rose Bergner 2nd ahead of Andrew Poole 3rd.

The Baltonsborough British Legion Chairman Martyn Underdown presented the awards, having donated the perpetual cups for the winning male and female including vouchers for the junior races. The race organisers Kay and David Franklin also thank the other sponsors, The Train Station, Baltonsborough Community Association, Framptons Ltd and Burns the Bread, with support from Wells City Harriers.
