There were some great performances by the Junior members of the Wells City Harrier cross country teams competing at the Somerset Schools Championships held this past weekend at Millfield school. The Championships brought together the best of the athletes from across the County competing for their area schools. Harrier trained athletes won three of the different age groups and were 2nd in two other races out of the 8 races on offer for the different age groups.
In the Minor boys race held over 2.4km for the Year 7s the race was won convincingly by Bradley Seager who has turned out for the Harriers a few times this season and seems to get better with every appearance. Bradley’s time was 9.26, and then in 6th place and one of our regular Tuesday training group members was Alex Williams in 9.53. In 10th in 10.03 was Joe Heath who is a regular at the Harrier’s Monday training group.
In the Junior girls race for Years 8 & 9 covering 3.5km, the club’s u13 Somerset Champion Lucy Baldwin was 2nd in a time of 11.37, Amy Darcy 8th in 12.18, and with Megan Rusca in 18th, 13.06 and Alexa James 33rd in 14.26. For the boys in the same age group, but over a longer 3.7km course one of the Harrier’s most consistent junior runners Luke Prior won the race in 13.10 with team-mate Mark Bailey close behind in 6th place in 13.37. Both Luke and Mark who are Year 9s train regularly on a Tuesday evening, along with Year 8 Oliver Dickinson who wasn’t too far behind in 10th place with 13.52. Josh Boon was next in with a time of 14.16 for 13th, then James Bridge in 17th, 14.33, Johnny Ellis, 25th in 14.59, James Williams in 28th in 15.07, and Jake Harris, 29th in15.12. That was some running by all of the Harriers.
In the Inter-girls race over 3.7km Emily Smith had to settle for 2nd place this year behind Amy Cooper. Emily’s time was 14.12. In 3rd and 4th place were Harrier team-mates Lilly Hawkins and Rebecca Carver with their times of15.08 and 15.14. Jemma Jones was 12th in 16.47 and Abi Gibbons 14th in 1710. In the Inter Boys race for Year 10 and 11s held over 5.5km, Matthew Dickinson ran a strong race for his winning time of 18.41. In 4th place was Oliver Fox, a year 10 athlete with his 19.22, and one place ahead of his team-mates Philip Bridge, 5th 19.54 and Matt Cole, 6th in 20.43. Ben Baldwin was 13th in 21.22, and his twin brother Tom, 19th in 21.38 with Liam Hathway in between in 17th place with a time of 21.35.
In the Senior girls race it was left to Esme Sheridan to fly the flag for the Harriers and she didn’t disappoint with her 6th place in 16.34 for the 3.7km course. In the Senior boys race George Harris had a great race for 3rd in 23.28 for the 6.8km course with Zak Stephenson 7th, 24.25, and Sam Bedford was next home in 24.34. Sam Harding was then home in 25th for 27.59. All of these seniors are part of the Harriers Tuesday training group.
Many of these juniors will now be selected for the County Schools team to compete at the South-west schools Championships on Saturday February 4th, whilst some will be out competing again for the Club this coming Saturday January 28th at the prestigious South of England Championships being held at Brighton.
Meanwhile we have heard how some of the youngsters that are part of the Harrier XC team got on at this week's Dorset schools championships.Those in the top ten are in line to compete for Dorset Schools on the 4th. Well done all!
